Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2
Millersville, Pa. — Despite not playing since last Wednesday, the Millersville softball team showed no signs of rust in sweeping non-conference opponent Columbia Union by scores of 8-0 and 2-1 at the Millersville University Softball Field on Monday afternoon.
The Marauders (22-19) were spured on by a four-run third inning in game one. Janelle Mrakovich and Jill Golomboski each picked up an RBI in the inning and Amy Kossyk delivered a two-run single. MU picked up three more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth en route to the victory. The Pioneers could do nothing with Marauders' starter Courtney Eckman who threw a complete game 3-hit shutout. Eckman (9-6) struck out seven on the day.
Casey Coker and Kelly Fitzgerald had two hits apiece in the game one win, and Mrakovich finished 3-for-4 as the Marauders outhit Columbia Union 10-3.
The back half of the doubleheader saw Millersville's Brittany Peterson and the Pioneers' Rebecca Zanelotti engage in a pitchers dual.
Zanelotti allowed just two MU hits over six innings, but a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth allowed the Marauders to get on the board, as Shaina Briel crossed the plate for a 1-0 lead. That lead was extended to 2-0 in the fifth on an RBI double by Lindsay Hosier.
That was all Peterson (7-6) would need. The freshman also threw a complete game and struck out seven to move one game over .500. Columbia Union would get a run in the top of the sixth, but the rookie shut the Pioneers down from there.
With the two wins, Millersville now has 22 on the season, topping its 20 win total from a year ago. The Marauders will look to capitalize on Monday's success when they travel to Shippensburg on Tuesday afternoon for a PSAC East doubleheader.
