Salem, Va. — In its final game in the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament on Sunday morning, the Millersville softball team emerged with a 10-9 victory in a back-and-forth battle with Seton Hill that featured 16 combined runs in the first four innings.
The Marauders (17-10) scored three of their first four runs on a wild pitch, a passed ball, and an error. Senior Shaina Briel finally got MU's first RBI when she drove in Ally Homa. Millersville led 4-2 after two innings, despite only having one hit.
The Griffins would tie the game at four in the top of the third when Jessi DiViltorio went deep, but the Marauders regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Sam Jackson.
The long ball got the best of MU again in the fourth, as Lisa Kaczynski's home run put Seton Hill back on top 6-5. Millersville, however, came up with a big inning when it needed it the most. The Black and Gold put a five spot on the board in the home half of the inning, opening up some much needed cushion on the pesky Griffins. Briel, Trisha Johnson, and Janelle Mrakovich all chipped in with RBI singles in the inning and the Marauders scored two runs via Seton Hill errors.
Seton Hill cut the deficit to three, 10-7, in the sixth, before making things interesting in its last at-bats. With one out in the seventh, DiViltorio hit another bomb out of the park to draw SHU within a run. Marauders' pitcher Brittany Peterson would strike out the next batter and get shortstop Maggie Jones to fly out to left fielder Jill Golomboski to end it.
The win wrapped up a 4-1 trip to Virginia for the Marauders and was their 12th victory in 13 games. Peterson had a rough go of it, giving up the three home runs, but got timely outs when she needed them to improve to an impressive 6-1 on the season.
Johnson finished the day 2-for-3 with an RBI and Kelly Fitzgerald was the only other Millersville player to record a multi-hit game in the contest which featured 10 combined errors (SHU 6, MU 4). DiViltorio did most of the damage for the Griffins, going 2-for-4 with the two home runs and four RBIs.
Millersville now gets set to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division play on Wednesday. The Marauders travel to Kutztown for a doubleheader with the Golden Bears to open the conference slate, before returning home to take on Shippensburg on Friday.
