Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2
Bristol, Pa. – The Millersville softball team got late runs in both games of its doubleheader with Holy Family and used those runs to manufacturer 8-7 and 7-1 victories over the homestanding Tigers on Thursday afternoon.
The Tigers (4-8) scored a run in innings one, three, and five, as they jumped out to a 3-1 lead in game one. The Marauders (7-9) answered with RBI singles from Jill Golomboski and Ally Homa in the top of the sixth to tie the game at three.
The game headed to extra innings still knotted at three, and it was Millersville that struck first in the extra frames. Freshman Dana Bozzetto started on second base, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Sarah Ernesto's sacrifice fly to give the Marauders a 4-3 edge.
Holy Family rallied in the bottom of the eighth, getting an RBI single from Bianca Robinson to re-tie the game. Brittany Peterson then worked out of a 1-out bases loaded jam to get the Marauders to the 9th.
After loading the bases, Casey Coker hit a sacrifice fly that brought in Homa. Janelle Mrakovich singled in a run and Amy Kossyk belted a two-run single as the Marauders put up a four spot in the 9th. Holy Family staged another furious rally, scoring three times in its half of the ninth, but Peterson got Robinson to ground into a fielder's choice to end it.
Lindsay Hosier, Mrakovich, Kossyk, and Golomboski finished with two hits apiece in game one, as the two teams combined for 27 hits. Senior Emily Flieger started the contest, giving up three runs over five innings and striking out three. Peterson got the win in relief, allowing four runs over four innings, but none of the runs were earned.
In the back half of the doubleheader it was MU that jumped in front. The Marauders got on the board when catcher Kelly Fitzgerald scored from third on an errant throw to first base by Holy Family's Jody Searfoss.
Millersville would then connect again in the fourth. Kossyk led off the inning with a big home run to left center field, her third of the season. Later in the inning Hosier belted a 2-out double that scored Fitzgerald and MU suddenly found itself with a 3-0 lead.
Holy Family cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, but never got any closer. Millersville would tack on four runs of insurance in the top of the seventh behind RBI hits from Coker (two RBIs), Trisha Johnson, and Fitzgerald.
Hosier, Fitzgerald, and Shaina Briel all picked up multi-hit games in the game two win. Sophomore Courtney Eckman had her second strong outing in the circle and picked up the victory. The nearby Lampeter-Strasburg graduate threw a complete game, allowing just the lone run and striking out two.
Millersville returns to the field Saturday afternoon when it hosts Philadelphia Sciences in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
