Matt Langione, one year removed from playing, was an immediate impact on the Millersville coaching staff. In his first years with the program, Langione took redshirt freshman Brad Benzing under his guidance and made him into a top goalkeeper.
In 2011, Millersville recorded 12 shutouts--one off Langione's sophomore season record--in their 14-7-2 record. Benzing, under Langione's watch, recorded 11 shutouts to tie Langione's school record. Benzing also threaten Langione's consecutive shutout streak of seven when he lead the 2011 Marauders to six-straight shutouts, five in the postseason.
Lagione holds the single-season Millersvile goalkeeping records for wins (18), shutouts (11), goals against average (0.68) and fewest goals against (12). He also holds career school records for wins (54), shutouts (24) and goals against average (0.94).
In his four-year stint, Lagione finished with a career record of 54-15-4, while leading the Marauders to four-straight PSAC tournament appearances.
In 2009, his junior season, Langione held his opponents scoreless for a stretch of 427 minutes and 44 seconds from Aug. 28 to Sept. 16, 2009. He finished the season with an impressive record of 17-1, earning him the second most wins in school history--one behind his record 18 wins in 2008. His 11 shutouts in 2009 were the second most in a single-season in PSAC history.
In 2008, Langione set the school record with 18 wins in a season while leading his team to its second-straight NCAA Division II tournament and first Atlantic Region Championship. He held the first two opponents of the tournament scoreless with 3-0 and 1-0 wins over California (Pa.) and Slippery Rock to win the region.
