Marauders top Shippensburg behind Leik goal
9/30/2026 9:31:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Millersville University men's soccer team triumphed over Shippensburg 1-0 on Wednesday. The Marauders finished with a 14-9 shots advantage, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal, and recorded the shutout.
Zander Leik scored the game-winner with an assist from Matias Schmidt, giving the Marauders the only goal they needed. Gavin Massimi made two saves in goal.
"I thought we controlled the game well for about a half hour but struggled after that until late on." said head coach Steve Widdowson. "We created chances and thankfully got the one goal we needed but we certainly needed to control the game better and for longer periods. However, we showed great resilience and workrate to maintain the shutout and earn another hugely valuable 3 points."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Leik put the Marauders in front in the first half, scoring off Schmidt's assist in the 30th minute for a 1-0 lead. The Marauders had built pressure before the goal, putting several shots on frame while the score remained 0-0. Shippensburg hit the left woodwork and produced a late corner, but the Marauders reached halftime ahead 1-0.
The Marauders kept Shippensburg off the board through a scoreless second half, including an early stretch in which the home side produced three corner kicks and three shots. Massimi made saves in the 83rd and 85th minutes, and the Marauders pushed back with Brian O'Neill's saved shot, Drew Jones' shot off the left woodwork, and two Antonio Siravo attempts. The scoreless half closed out a 1-0 Marauders win.
"We now have an opportunity to rest some guys and get a few back from injury as we prepare for the start of the second half of PSAC play next week." stated Widdowson.
