ABOUT THE GAME
- After opening the season with a long road trip and narrow loss, Millersville takes to Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium for the first time under the direction of Drew Folmar ‘01 Saturday against California (Pa.). Cal rolled to a 49-24 win over Charleston in its season opener and received votes in this week’s AFCA Division II Coaches Poll. The Vulcans were voted third in the PSAC West Preseason Poll after making back-to-back NCAA Playoff appearances in 2024 and 2025. Cal went 9-3 in 2025.
- Saturday marks the first time that Folmar leads a Millersville team onto the field since 2000, when he was a senior quarterback playing in Dr. Gene Carpenter's final game as head coach. Folmar was the 1997 PSAC East Freshman of the Year, led the Marauders to a PSAC East title in 1998 and an NCAA Playoff appearance in 1999. Among the school records that Folmar set were yards passing in game (458), season (3,280), and career (10,483), passing efficiency in a season and career, and touchdown passes in a season (31) and career (92). Folmar was the quarterback for Millersville's last NCAA Playoff win and its last PSAC East title.
GAME STORYLINES
- Millersville had plenty of bright spots and moments to build upon in last week's loss to Glenville State. In 2025, the Marauders surrendered 44 points, 276 yards rushing and 604 yards of offense. Last week, the 'Ville defense was much tougher. The Marauders forced four three-and-out possessions and were outstanding in the red zone, surrendering 10 points on four red zone tries. Antonio Johnson recorded his first career interception on one of those stops. Another highlight was Tommy Hunsicker rushing for 120 yards--the most by a Marauder since September of 2024. He totaled the most rushing yards by a Millersville quarterback since Rob Footman Jr. went for 127 against Shippensburg on Oct. 22, 2022. As a team, Millersville rushed for 218 yards--its highest total Oct. 5, 2024--averaging 5.0 yards per carry. Mekhi Ashby totaled 82 yards, coming within five of his career high.
- Blocking for Hunsicker were four new starters on the offensive line, including three true freshmen--George Queen III, Milo Makes and Nafiq Brown. The line, which also included first-time starter Jayden Snook and Tre Spahr, making his first start at center, surrendered just one sack.
- Five different players caught passes for the Marauders, and it was the first career reception for three of the players. Receiver Caileb Howse and tight end Mason Musitano, making their first career starts at the positions, led the team with four receptions apiece.
- On defense, Kai Stiansen recorded a sack. Bryce Beutler led the team with 11 tackles, two tackles for loss and a broken up pass. In addition to his interception, Johnson broke up three passes. His four passes defended were the most by any player in the PSAC this season.
- Millersville does need to clean up its penalties. Its 13 for 114 yards were the most by any team in the PSAC in any single game this season. There were 23 flags thrown in that game, topped only by the West Chester/Lincoln game, in which 27 penalties were called. Explosive plays will also have to be limited against California. The Marauders gave up 50- and 87-yard touchdown passes against Glenville State, and California's offense looked unstoppable against Charleston. It totaled 42 points in the first half, scoring touchdowns on six of the first eight offensive possessions. All of them were quick-strike drives as well, with only one drive lasting longer than three minutes. Quarterback Eric Gibson Jr. completed 17 of 25 passes for 213 yards and four touchdowns. Gibson Jr. is in his first season at Cal after throwing for over 2,500 yards (ranking 10th in school history) and competing 65.3% of his passes (second-highest ever) at Division I Northern Colorado. Bobby Boyd Jr. recorded a 70-yard touchdown run. Three of Gibson's touchdown passes were longer than 30 yards.
- Cal was certainly helped by an opportunistic defense. It generated three turnovers--one fumble and two interceptions. Nevan Hopkins took an interception 41 yards for a touchdown.
- Cal's team captains this year are Jacob King and Wilfredo Diaz. King was an All-PSAC West selection on the offensive line in 2025. Diaz is a newcomer but played in 25 games at Edinboro, leading Division II in tackles in 2024. Fellow linebacker Malachi Thomas, who recorded 11 1/2 tackles for loss and 5 1/2 sacks last season was named to the D2Football.Com Elite 100 Watch List over the summer.
SERIES HISTORY
- Meetings between Millersville and Cal are rare, and the teams playing at Biemesderfer Stadium even more so. Cal holds a 14-3 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 1930. The teams played five times between 1930 and 1936 with Cal winning each game and Millersville not scoring more than seven points in any of matchup. After a 14-7 Cal win in 1949, the teams did not play against until 1974, when the Marauders rolled to a 40-0 victory at home. Since that game in 1974, Millersville and Cal have played just 10 times overall and four times at Biemesderfer Stadium. The last time the teams played was in 2021, which was a 30-0 home win for the Vulcans. The last time Cal made a trip to Millersville was on Sept. 16, 2017. Cal won that game 29-13. Millersville's Kevin Wiggins caught 10 passes for 128 yards. Cal has posted a shutout against Millersville three times in the last six games.
