SALEM, W.V. - The Millersville men's soccer team hit the road Saturday afternoon for a matchup against Salem University. The Marauders jumped out to an early lead and maintained control throughout the contest, earning a 3-0 victory.
Millersville wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Brian O'Neill connected with senior Matias Schmidt in the opening 15 minutes. Schmidt finished the opportunity with a one-touch shot to give the Marauders an early 1-0 advantage.
The Marauders continued to apply pressure, doubling their lead shortly after. A defensive error by Salem gave Roy Parkyn an opportunity, and the English native capitalized to push Millersville ahead 2-0.
Parkyn struck again just five minutes later. A series of passes between Parkyn and fellow English native Louis Wright created an open look for Parkyn, who found the back of the net to give the Marauders a three-goal advantage.
"We played well today and really came out of the gate with a high quality performance. Furthermore, we had the end product to turn the quality ball movement into goals which was very pleasing." said head coach Steve Widdowson.
Millersville's defense continued to keep Salem off the scoreboard for the remainder of the match. Gavin Massimi earned the victory in goal, making one save. Freshman Logan Kratz also saw time in net, making his collegiate debut and recording one save.
"We have been on the road a lot this year so it's becoming quite natural for us as we head out to shepherd next week." said Widdowson. "I think today was a really good way to prepare for our first conference game but every PSAC game is a challenge. We will need to be at our best again to hopefully get our conference journey off to a positive start."
Millersville will open conference play next week when it travels to Shepherd for a 3:30 p.m. match Wednesday.
