CALIFORNIA, Pa. - The Marauder soccer program returned to the win column Wednesday afternoon when it took down the Vulcans of California (Pa.), 7-1.

Millersville was eager to return to the pitch following Sunday's loss to Ashland, and that was shown when Louis Wright and Travis Hemphill put two shots on goal in the opening minutes.

The Vulcans ultimately jumped ahead in the 12th minute when they placed their first shot in the back of the net. California remained ahead for the remainder of the first half as Millersville couldn't find a response.

The second half was all Millersville. Zander Leik began the charge six minutes into the half when he found the back of the net off an assist from Wright. Ten minutes later, freshman Antonio Siravo scored his first collegiate goal off assists from Matias Schmidt and Leik to give Millersville the lead.

A red card on the Vulcans two minutes later gave Millersville a penalty kick that senior Haven Thomas capitalized on, making him two-for-two on the year in penalty kicks. Five seconds later, Leik found the back of the net again to extend the Millersville lead to four goals.

Brian O'Neill joined the scoring in the 69th minute when Kehmar Green found the sophomore to notch his first goal of the season. Freshman Omar Warthen finished off the scoring as he found the back of the net twice for his first collegiate goals, with assists from Alex Delavan and John Fiorillo.

Head coach Steve Widdowson's message entering the half was to simplify the game and remain patient.

"We just talked about playing simpler and being a bit more patient to let things open up and to keep the ball moving," said Widdowson. "We knew we could possess and move the ball but were just a bit too anxious or overcomplicated things. It was a good result in the end, but we have to be honest with ourselves and know that we still need to be much better in several areas if we want to continue being successful. Job done today, but now we need to keep improving so we continue to move forward."

The Marauders will hit the road again Saturday when they travel to Salem for a 2:30 p.m. start.
