ABOUT THE GAME
- Millersville faces the tough task of slowing down the PSAC's top scoring offense Saturday when No. 11 Slippery Rock visits Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium for a noon kickoff. Millersville is in search of its first win but has battled in the first two weeks, losing by three in the road opener at Glenville State and jumping out to an early 9-0 lead and it being a two-score game in the fourth quarter last week against California (Pa.). Slippery Rock opened its season with a thrilling 45-43 double overtime win over No. 12 Minnesota Duluth before rolling past East Stroudsburg 59-35 last week.
- At halftime of Saturday's game, Millersville football will recognize its 2026 Wall of Honor inductees. The group includes fullback Mike Ortman ‘72, linebacker John Ricketts ’73, defensive back and longtime assistant coach Brad Mangle ‘83, offensive lineman Chuck Bitsko ’89, center Matt Doherty ‘01, and linebacker Sean Dugan ’17. Ortman rushed for over 1,000 yards as a senior in 1971 and set a program record for points scored. Ricketts was a team captain, three-year starter and led the team in tackles as a senior. In 1979 and 1980, Mangle led Millersville in fumble recoveries and picked off a team-high five passes as a senior. He spent 30 years on the sidelines as an assistant coach, including 20 as the Marauders' offensive coordinator, coaching 10 All-Americans. Bitsko played tackle for the legendary 1988 team and earned All-PSAC East honors. Doherty was one of five offensive linemen in program history to be named All-PSAC East three times. He was the center for a record-setting offense, snapping the ball to now head coach Drew Folmar. Dugan was a two-time All-PSAC East First Team pick and two-time team captain. He is now the linebackers coach at Eastern Michigan.
GAME STORYLINES
- Millersville's young offensive players have made an immediate impact. In addition to three true freshmen starting on the offensive line in George Queen III, Nafiq Brown and Milo Makes, a pair of freshmen, Jayden Walters and Kyreek Bradshaw, led the Marauders in receiving in week two. Walters hauled in four catches for 96 yards and a touchdown, and Bradshaw totaled 48 yards receiving, including a 34-yard catch on the team's first offensive snap. Young players are also making splashes on defense. Freshman Amir Anderson recorded his first career sack last week against California.
- Tommy Hunsicker was off to a strong start against California, completing 7 of 10 passes with a touchdown, but he was injured in the second quarter and replaced by Eddie Corkery, who made his collegiate debut. Ryan Zeltt, Millersville's back-up quarterback, was injured in his first drive in the first quarter of the week one game and was not available against California. The last time Millersville had one quarterback start all 11 games in a season was in 2009. Three quarterbacks have already taken snaps in the first halves of the first two games.
- Millersville rushed for 218 yards and three touchdowns in the opener but managed just 39 yards on 26 carries last week. Both of Slippery Rock's opponents have had success run the balling. Minnesota Duluth rushed for 370 yards and five touchdowns in the opener, and ESU averaged better than 6.0 yards per carry for 241 yards and four touchdowns in week two. The Rock has allowed four runs of over 30 yards.
- On defense, Bryce Beutler has been as advertised. The returning All-PSAC East performer at linebacker totaled 11 tackles against California and ranks third in the PSAC, averaging 11.0 tackles per game through two games. Dating back to last season, Beutler has recorded at least nine tackles in four consecutive games and double-digit stops in seven of 13.
- Millersville's run defense ranks 10th in the 15-team PSAC, allowing 4.4 yards per carry and 163 yards per game. That unit has its hands full Saturday as Slippery Rock averages 215.5 rushing yards per game. JayJay Jordan is the PSAC leader with 125.5 rushing yards per game, and he's scored four touchdowns while averaging 8.1 yards per carry.
- Senior Brad Hoffman started the season opener at quarterback for Slippery Rock and completed 11 of 19 passes for 154 yards while rushing for 42. But he threw just two passes in week two. DaOne Jones went 7 for 13 for 150 yards in week one and then went 23 for 30 for 250 yards and three scores in week two. He also averaged 12.0 yards per carry in the win over East Stroudsburg.
- Slippery Rock has managed to outscored both opponents in high scoring games and is tied for third in Division II in points per game (52.0), 11th in total offense (492.5), 19th in passing offense (277.0), and 28th in rushing offense.
SERIES HISTORY
- At home or on the road, Slippery Rock has controlled the all-time series with Millersville. Since Biemesderfer Stadium was built in 1968, the teams have played 24 times, and Slippery Rock is 10-2 against the Marauders both at home and at Biemesderfer Stadium. Slippery Rock has won 11 in a row in the series with Millersville's last win coming by a 17-14 score in 2004. The teams played every season from 2000-2009 and have played six times since 2014. The Rock has scored at least 42 points in each of the last six meetings while Millersville has not score more than 21 since 2008. The last meeting between the teams was in 2023. Millersville had started 2-0 and were coming off a 28-21 win at Gannon the week before. In a night road game at then No. 13 Slippery Rock, Hakim Melvin took the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, and the Marauders led 21-7 early in the second quarter. Slippery Rock, however, scored twice in the final five minutes of the first half to send the game tied into halftime and finished the game on a 35-0 run. Of Millersville's four wins in the series, only one--the 35-0 win in 1977--has been by more than eight points. That 1977 game was a nationally televised NAIA Game of the Week, and that Millersville team, led by quarterback Carmen Lex, won the first PSAC East title in program history.
