MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - It was a tough afternoon for the Marauder soccer program following a shutout defeat to the Ashland Eagles. Millersville struggled to find its rhythm and ultimately dropped its second contest of the year, 2-0.
The Marauders looked to strike first in the opening 10 minutes when Drew Jones looked to capitalize on two opportunities that saw him place both shots just outside the goal. The Eagles went on the attack as well and placed two shots on goal that were saved by junior Gavin Massimi.
Ashland struck first in the 33rd minute off a set piece following a free-kick foul. A header found the bottom-right corner as the Eagles entered halftime with a one-goal lead.
The Eagles went on to strike again in the early moments of the second half following an error by the Marauder back line that led to an open shot on Massimi that proved to be fatal.
Millersville looked to respond, but miscommunication led to multiple changes in possession, ruining its chances of making a charge. Roy Parkyn had an opportunity to reduce the deficit, but his shot went left of the goal as the score remained 2-0.
"Today simply came down to execution and efficiency." said head coach Steve Widdowson. "We created more than enough opportunities to score, and got into good areas often, but then we either failed to execute the finish or weren't efficient in our last pass. Defensively was the same and we were not clean and efficient enough in dealing with situations. We also caused our own problems with poor decisions in our build up play and played into their pressure too often, instead of playing through or over it. We have to learn from it and look to immediately get back on track on Wednesday."
Ashland went on to take the victory, shutting out the Marauders, 2-0. The Marauders will return to action Wednesday as they head to PSAC West opponent California for a 2 p.m. contest.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Massimi recorded four saves.
