MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — After catching for 20 innings,
Angelina Edwards lifted a fly ball to deep center to bring home
Jocelyn Langer and lift the Millersville Marauders to a 6–5 victory over the West Chester Golden Rams. That game was a chaotic 10-inning test of endurance just like the one previous, which ended 8–6 in favor of the Golden Rams.
In game one, the Marauders had a 5–2 lead going into the seventh, but a costly error allowed the visitors to tie the game up and take the lead all in one swing of the bat. The 'Ville fought back in their turn at the dish, plating a run on a
Hailey Watlington two-out double and sending the game to extras. West Chester brought home the go-ahead tallies with a mammoth two-run home run in the top of the 10th. Game two followed a similar script, as Millersville was up 5-4 going into the seventh but West Chester tied it up once more, forcing Edwards, Langer and Co. to bear down and send the fans home happy in the 10th. Millersville head coach
Jen Probst was proud of her team's effort when she spoke postgame.
"There were a lot of good lessons for us moving forward," Probst said. "Finishing the day with one loss and one win doesn't really show how hard we competed. It was some of the best softball I've seen us play and there were a lot of positives to take away."
Freshman pitcher
Delaney Troxell found herself on both sides of the coin during the doubleheaders' five hours and 21 minutes of runtime. In game one, she gave up the decisive long ball; 90 minutes later, she claimed a much-earned win after tossing 4.1 innings and allowing one run.
Despite the few errors, the Marauder defense was mostly excellent, especially in the outfield. The freshman trio of Langer,
Cara Mazzucco and
Bryn O'Connor all made spectacular diving plays when called upon. Behind the dish, Edwards gunned down one of four potential base stealers on the afternoon.
"I thought our outfield did a tremendous job," Probst said postgame. "They robbed so many base hits with their range and diving ability. I think that set the tone for us to be able to bounce back and get that second win."
In contrast, West Chester's defensive miscues allowed Millersville to score seven of its 12 total runs.
Nicolina Pezzone smashed a laser at the centerfielder in the fourth inning of game one that clanked off the fielder's glove and allowed one run to score. A few batters later, Langer would benefit from a throwaway that let two more runs score and put the Marauders up 5–2. In game two, two miscues in the third inning led to three unearned runs and put Millersville up 4–2.
The Marauders will take a much-deserved rest over the next couple days and return to action at Lock Haven on March 21. Start times are scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m.
