Millersville and Adelphi end in a 1-1 draw
9/8/2018 6:56:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Garden City, N.Y. – The Millersville University men's soccer team went up early on the Adelphi Panthers, scoring in the 24th minute of its first away game but the homestanding Panthers forced overtime. Neither team could find the winner and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Marauders' goal was scored by junior Jacob Gosselin.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Senior Chase Flickinger's shot was blocked by the goalie but the ball landed Gosselin's foot with an open net. He converted the first goal of the game in the 24th minute.
• The Marauders led the game going into the locker room at halftime. A few minutes after halftime, the Panthers struck with their equalizer. Noah Waxner nearly scored but his shot hit off the crossbar. Stephen Megaloudis ripped a shot into a wide open net to tie the game 1-1.
• There was a heavy load on the goalkeepers as they combined to face a total of 33 shots.
• Less than a three minute to go in regulation, junior Ethan Woods and senior Jaxson Burns had game-winning opportunities but were not able to convert.
• In the second overtime, the Marauders attempted three corner kicks in the final two minutes and Flickinger got off two shots.
HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON QUOTES
• "I really enjoyed the game today. We played some really good soccer against a tough team that would not back down. I think we did more than enough to win the game but just let ourselves down with our final pass or shot. If we were a bit better with the final piece, we would have ran out easy winners but just wasn't meant to be today."
• "I thought the back four and keeper did well today. Their build-up play was very good and they defended well against a dangerous attack."
• "We just need to keep doing what we are doing at the moment. If we clean up a few details and get sharper in and around the box then we will be in a great place for the next game."
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• Junior goalkeeper Darian McCauley saved six shots from going into the net. Three of those six saves came at the start of the second overtime within seconds of each other.
• Flickinger tied his season high of four shots in a game.
NOTES
• Millersville tied its season high with 13 fouls--the same amount in the Wilmington match.
• Millersville had eight corner kick opportunities with three coming in the second overtime.
UP NEXT
• The Marauders look to get back in the win column Wednesday night when they take on their second to last non-conference opponent of the season, Saint Thomas Aquinas, on Pucillo Field. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.
