Women's basketball drops 77-68 decision to UVA-Wise

West Chester, Pa. - Despite a strong season debut from Lauren Lister that saw her score a match-high 24 points and total a career-high five assists, the Millersville University women's basketball team fell to UVA-Wise 77-68 on Sunday afternoon at a neutral site in West Chester, Pa. This is the first time the Marauders have began their season with a 0-2 record since the 2005-06 campaign.
Millersville got off to a strong start, holding a 14-9 lead late in the first quarter, but the Cavaliers finished the period on an 11-2 run to grab a lead that they wouldn't surrender.
The Marauders kept the game close throughout the second quarter, trailing just 31-29 after a layup by Lister with 3:43 on the clock. But a 26-10 run by UVA-Wise gave it a comfortable 18-point lead midway through the third quarter.
Millersville outscored the Cavaliers 17-13 in the final quarter and cut the deficit to seven points late in the period, but it was too little too late and the Marauders lost their second game in as many days.
"We're a young team that's been inconsistent," head coach Mary Fleig said. "We had some good runs in the second half, but that's an area we need to improve on."
Millersville shot 51 percent from the field and scored 25 points off of 25 UVA-Wise turnovers. Chandera Jones-Aryeh was second on the team with 10 points and Catherine Copeland grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• For the second-consecutive game the Marauders struggled to maintain possession, turning over the ball 27 times and totaling just nine offensive rebounds.
• Lister made nine of her 10 shots from the field and led the team in assists for the seventh time of her career.
• Erika Reed provided a spark off the bench, scoring seven points in just 14 minutes of action.
• Mahya Woodton made her collegiate debut in the match.
QUOTABLE
• "We had the same issues as yesterday, offensive rebounds and turnovers. We had 19 turnovers in the first half and were getting beat at the boards, so those are two areas we need to work on."
• "It was great to have Lauren Lister back. She gets to the rim really well which creates opportunities for us on offense. Defensively she had some key steals which gave us a spark."
• "Our freshmen have done well in some key spots, they just need to be more consistent. Kennedy Middleton had some key charges for us off the bench. I thought Chandera Jones-Aryeh played better today than yesterday."
NOTES
• This marks the Cavaliers' first win over Millersville. The Marauders defeated UVA-Wise 56-47 to start their season last year and also beat them 69-65 back in 2014.
UP NEXT
• Millersville will next play its home opener against Chestnut Hill on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 5:30 p.m. in Pucillo Gymnasium.
