SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — A below-standard second half for the Marauders led to a two-game skid in the midst of critical playoff seeding. In the second half, the Marauders shot 29.4% from the field and 25.0% from beyond the arc on just 21 field goal attempts. Slow second halves have been a constant for the Marauders over the last two games, as they have scored a combined 40 second-half points in those contests.
It was a fight for the Marauders the entire way in tonight's match-up. In the opening quarter of play, Millersville hit 5 of 14 shots, putting up just 11 points. They trailed the Rams, who had a poor shooting quarter of their own but maintained a lead due to shot volume, 14-11.
Millersville fought back, however, erupting for 22 second-quarter points—more than they produced in the entire second half. During this impressive stretch, the Marauders shot 53.3% from the field and 66.7% from three-point range. This efficiency gave Millersville a 33–31 halftime lead against a Shepherd team fighting for its playoff life. The first half mirrored their first regular-season meeting at Millersville nearly a month ago, when the Marauders led 27–24 at the break.
The second half did not play in the Marauders' favor as it did in their prior matchup; however, the lead quickly evaporated, courtesy of Shepherd's 23 third-quarter points compared to the Marauders' six. From there, the Black and Gold could not fight back. Shepherd continued to hit shots down the stretch and finished the second half shooting 51.9% from the field, a mark that favored them greatly against the Marauders' 29.4% second-half shooting performance.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Daniella Ranieli led the way for the Maraduers with 14 points. Behind her were Morgan Mahoney (9), Carley Berk (7), and Kelly Cleaver (7).
- Millersville did not put pressure on the Rams defensively, ending the night with two blocks and two steals, which marks a season-low across the board in team defense.
- The Marauders turned the ball over 21 times as opposed to Shepherd's nine turnovers. 25 of Shepherd's points came off the Marauders' turnovers.
