Fourth quarter collapse proves critcal in overtime loss to Mansfield

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. --- A one-point fourth quarter opened the door for Mansfield to force overtime despite Millersville's 10-point lead at the start of it. The Marauders shot 0-18 from the field, with their one point coming off a Gabby Bowes free throw.
From tip-off, this game had all the makings of a thriller written all over it with each team trading blows back and forth with the Marauders ultimately holding a one-point lead a the end of the first quarter. Carley Berk opened the game with a perfect 3 for 3 from beyond the arc in a first-quarter scoring duel against Katie Sheeler, who also had nine points.
The Marauders opened things up in the second quarter and stayed hot from the field, shooting 47.1% from the field, whereas Mansfield cooled off and found themselves facing an eight-point deficit going into the halftime break.
Millersville stayed on top in another strong quarter, outshooting the Moutnies' 20% with 37.5% from the field. The third quarter was anchored by a strong defensive performance from Kelly Cleaver, who finished with a team-high nine blocks, and by bench production from Rachel Boehm and Bryn Zentner. The bench provided a spark for the Marauders, scoring 21 of their 56 points at the time.
Things took a turn for the worse in the final 12 minutes of regulation, where the Marauders shot 0-18 from the field and conceded 11 Mansfield points, which erased the 10-point lead that the Marauders had to start the fourth. The Marauders also took a Flagrant 1 foul, which awarded the Mounties two free throws and possession of the ball, both of which they capitalized on.
The overtime period started heavily in the Marauders' favor, with them hopping out to an early 61-57 lead, off a layup from Carley Berk and a Rachel Boehm jump shot. But the Mounties clawed back and kept things within range for the remainder of the period until things were knotted up at 65 apiece with 30 seconds remaining. In a down-to-the-wire possession, the Marauders conceded a driving layup to Katie Sheeler with 1.6 seconds remaining, which proved to put the game on ice as the ensuing possession for the Marauders resulted in a rushed three-point attempt from Carley Berk.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Kelly Cleaver, who has been as dominant as they come on the defensive end of the ball, had nine blocks, partnered with 15 points, to play a pivotal role for Millersville.
- In addition to Cleaver's nine blocks, it was a block party for the Marauders, who had four blocks from Morgan Mahoney, and one block from Holly Gohl and Carley Berk.
- Carley Berk, who shot an efficient 4 of 6 from three, led the Marauders in scoring with 18 points and three steals.
- The Marauder bench provided 24 of the 65 points, 10 of which came from Rachel Boehm and eight courtesy of Bryn Zentner.
- The largest lead the Marauders had was 15 points with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.
UP NEXT
The Marauders control their own destiny in the playoff race with remaining games against Bloomsburg, West Chester, Lock Haven, and Kutztown, all of which share records similar to or better than Millersville's. But first, they will face off with Shepherd this coming Wednesday, who is also fighting for their playoff lives, at 5:30 p.m.
