Millersville starts their season at Pucillo with a win
9/6/2017 8:39:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Millersville, Pa. -- The Millersville men's soccer team battled the elements and opened their season at Pucillo Field with a cold and soggy 3-0 victory over the Felician Golden Falcons Wednesday.
Before the game began, Head Coach Steve Widdowson and Athletic Director Miles Gallagher honored former Millersville Head Coach Bob Charles for his contributions to the men's soccer program as well as award former player Christopher Sosa as the 2016 season's most valuable player.
The rain did not slow down Millersville as the Marauders played fast and attacked the Felician defense, but the Golden Falcons absorbed the pressure for over 30 minutes. In the 32nd minute, senior Ahmed Qaisi streaked up the right side and crossed the ball towards sophomore Jacob Gosselin. The Felician defenders attempted to stop Gosselin and instead knocked the ball in for an own goal.
Six minutes later, junior Chase Flickinger charged up the middle and ripped a shot directly at the Felician goalie. The shot was deflected from the save and Gosselin tapped in the rebound. Millersville continued to threaten on offense, but the score held at 2-0 until the end of the first half.
Millersville continued their aggressive play at the beginning of the second half and had one goal called off for offsides in the 57th minute. Undeterred, the Marauders persisted and senior Kody Eberly threaded a pass from the right side of the box to the center where freshman McClain Smith was waiting to knock the ball past the goalie and into bottom right side of the goal.
The Marauders out shot the Golden Falcons 19-9 while placing seven shots on goal compared to Felician's four. The Millersville defense suffocated virtually every attempt by Felician and sophomore Darian McCauley recorded his first clean sheet of the season. Gosselin and Smith both recorded their first goals of the season while Eberly recorded his first assist of the season.
The Marauders enjoyed a brief homecoming before they get back on the road. The team heads to West Virginia to take on Wheeling Jesuit on Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. then plays West Virginia Wesleyan a week later on Sept.17 at 1 p.m.
