GAME OVERVIEW
• Every sporting season, is some way or another, can feel like a bit of a rollercoaster ride. After a 3-3 start, Millersville caught fire and won 10 straight, eventually having its win streak end against No. 1 Shippensburg. The Marauders rounded out the regular season with a 3-2 OT win over Slippery Rock to improve to 14-4 (8-2 PSAC). Millersville finished second in the PSAC regular season standings, earning a first-round bye in the tournament. The Marauders draw third-seeded East Stroudsburg, which beat Slippery Rock 5-0 in the quarterfinals. Millersville is back in the tournament for the program-record sixth consecutive season.
• Earlier this season, head coach Shelly Behrens picked up her 200th career win. Behrens, who is in her 10th season as the Marauder field hockey coach, became one of nine coaches to reach the milestone and is ranked fourth among active Division II coaches in total victories. Erica Tarsi has scored 12 goals and added seven assists to total a team-leading 31 points on the year. Millersville's second leading scoring, Kathleen Bishop, scored nine goals on the year. Tarsi has scored nine of her goals in the last nine games including three multi-goal games during that stretch. Tarsi, Bishop and Gazzio are all tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals apiece. Bishop has at least one point in three of the last four games.
• Not to be forgotten is junior Aliza Mizak, who was the first Marauder to be an All-America selection in each of her first two seasons. Mizak has four goals in her last six games after going 10 games without a goal. Mizak already ranks 10th in program history with 25 career goals.
• Last season Millersville won the PSAC Championship for the second time under the direction of Behrens (2013). In 2014 and 2015, the Marauders were the runners-up in the conference tournament. Millersville has played for the PSAC Championship in five consecutive seasons. Millersville last won back-to-back titles in 1985-86.
ABOUT THE SERIES
• In 2017, Millersville and East Stroudsburg have played twice. In the first matchup, then third-ranked Millersville lost to then No. 1 ESU, 2-0. In the second game between the two PSAC powerhouses, Millersville defeated the Warriors 1-0 in double-overtime behind a goal from Mizak. These close games are common-place for this series, and so too is the tradition of each time being nationally ranked. In the second matchup, Millersville was ranked fifth and ESU was No. 1. Seven of the last eight games have been decided by one goal and six of the last seven have finished with 1-0 final scores.
• Last year Millersville and ESU split the season series 1-1. The Marauders beat the No. 1 ranked Warriors 1-0 in the PSAC Tournament semifinals. ESU won the PSAC Championship over Millersville on its home field in 2015.
• Since 2011, Millersville holds a one game series lead, winning seven of the 13 match-ups. Each team has been a powerhouse as of late with Millersville winning the national championship in 2014 and ESU doing so in 2015. In their seven matchups within the last three years, both teams have been ranked in the top 10 in all seven games. This year, in all three matchups, both teams were ranked in the top five.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
• The East Stroudsburg Warriors are ranked second in the nation and in the NCAA Atlantic Regional. The Warriors have been able to put together quite the season, going 16-3 (8-2 PSAC). There season features some impressive wins, including an 8-0 shutout over No. 5 Stonehill, a 2-0 win over No. 1 Shippensburg and a win over No. 3 Millersville.
• ESU's head coach Sandy Miller just recently joined an exclusive club, picking up her 400th win. She has a cast of talented players again in 2017, as has been evident all season and in prior seasons. There are still six starters from last year's team and some of those same players were also a part of the 2015 National Championship winning team. Sydney McCarthy is one of those players, and Millersville will have to keep a close eye on her. McCarthy has tallied 10 goals and 10 assists on the year. Melanie Shambaugh and Bailey Quinn are also legitimate scoring threats, each scoring 10 goals or more this season too.
