MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — The Millersville University field hockey team lost to West Chester 4-1 on Wednesday at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. The Marauders generated six of their eight shots and their lone goal in the fourth quarter after being held without a shot in the second and third.
West Chester finished with advantages in total shots (14-8) and shots on goal (7-4), giving the Marauders fewer attacking chances over the full 60 minutes. The Marauders' goalkeepers combined for three saves, matching West Chester's save total, while Erin Esterhuizen supplied five of the Marauders' eight shots and put two on goal.
Following the Marauders' loss to West Chester, head coach Shelly Behrens found areas to build on against a league opponent, saying, "I thought there were lots of positives." She added, "Obviously West Chester's a great opponent; they always make us better," but said the Marauders needed more consistency: "I think we could have responded better in certain situations, um, you know, but tonight was their night, and we just have to, we have to learn, get better, and, you know, I think just compete a little harder."
The Marauders spent the first quarter chasing after West Chester turned early pressure into a 1-0 lead on Alexa Lehman's goal in the 7th minute. The Marauders answered with two Lauren Kampi penalty corners and two Esterhuizen shots, one blocked and one wide, but could not score. West Chester added Anna Finn's goal in the 15th minute, leaving the Marauders down 2-0 after the first quarter.
'Ville kept West Chester scoreless in the second quarter as Katherine Hanlon stopped consecutive shots during a penalty-corner sequence midway through the quarter. West Chester earned four corners and attempted four shots in the quarter, but the teams went into halftime with the Marauders trailing 2-0.
The Marauders spent much of the third quarter defending West Chester pressure, as the visitors earned four penalty corners and had three Finn shots blocked before Allison Patel scored in the 38th minute to make it 3-0. Hanlon made a save on Veerle Hersman in the 44th minute, and the Marauders entered the fourth quarter trailing 3-0.
The Marauders broke through late in the fourth quarter, with Kamryn Bittle scoring in the 59th minute to make it 4-1. Earlier, the Marauders generated three penalty corners and four shots before West Chester added a goal in the 55th minute. The Marauders finished the quarter with four penalty corners and closed the game with a 4-1 loss.
Behrens pointed to the finish as something to carry forward, saying, "I thought the 4th quarter was some good competition. Â I think just making every quarter count, playing the small game and not focusing on the outcome. Â Doing the little things well, 2nd, 3rd plus effort. Â Bloom is also a great opponent, so we need to keep fighting for what we want to fight for."
