Women's basketball falls at third-ranked Cal

California, Pennsylvania - After Mary Fleig notched her 600th career win against Seton Hill, the Millersville women's basketball team was defeated by California (Pa.) Sunday. The Vulcans, who came into the game ranked third in the country, had five different players score in double figures. Seairra Barrett led the way with 19 points while Courtney Hinnant posted a double double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Aunjel Van Brakle scored 13 points and Jade Farquhar scored 11 while Kendra Bamberger registered eight points and pulled down five rebounds. Millersville turned the ball over 27 times compared to just eight for California as the Vulcans capitilized with 37 points off turnovers.
Millersville got on the board first and took a 5-0 lead after Aunjel Van Brakle hit a three pointer. California would respond with a 9-2 run to take the lead and never relinquish it. After Jade Farquhar tied the game at 9, the Vulcans scored eight unanswered points to take command of the game and a 12 point lead into the second quarter.
With the score 31-16, the Marauders cut the deficit to 10 when Courtney Hinnant hit a jumper to make the score 31-21. California would score the last five points of the half and take a 40-23 lead into the break.
Kendra Bamberger would hit a layup to pull the team within 12, but the Marauders could not keep up with the third-ranked Vulcans who outscored Millersville 24-19 and 22-18 in the final two quarters.
The Marauders now fall to 3-5 (1-3 PSAC) and will have some time off before traveling to face Slippery Rock Saturday at 1 p.m.
