St. Petersburg, Florida - No Marauder reached double figures as the Millersville women's basketball team lost to Tampa University 64-41 Friday. The Marauders are still without the services of Celeste and Janelle Robinson (injuries) as Alayah Hall, Courtney Hinnant and Jade Farquhar each recorded eight points in the loss.
The Spartans had four players score 10 or more points including Elena De Alfredo and Karma Jeremie who each recorded a team-high 17. Tampa outscored Millersville in each of the four quarters, including the second quarter in which the Spartans would take control of the game scoring 16 points compared to Millersville's nine.
The Marauder looked good to start, as Aunjel Van Brakle and Krista Mellinger put Millersville up 4-0 but Tampa would go on a 9-2 run and take a 9-6 lead that they would not relinquish. Mellinger would drill a three to tie the game and the two sides traded buckets in the final minutes of the quarter. With the Spartans up 20-14, Farquhar nailed a three-pointer with under a minute to play in the period to make the lead three.
Millersville would pull within one point when Hinnant hit a jump shot to make the score 20-19, but Tampa would take control of the game scoring seven unanswered points. The Marauders would cut the deficit to five twice, but Tampa's offense continued to roll as they went into halftime up 36-26.
The Spartans picked up right where they left off in the third, opening the quarter with a bucket and extending the lead to 20 points after a three pointer and a pair of free throws. Millersville would cut the lead down to 14 points, but Tampa scored five in a row to stop the Marauder comeback and ultimately take the game 64-41.
After starting 2-0, Millersville has lost three games in a row but will return to the court in Florida tomorrow when they face Eckerd College at 3 p.m.
