Shippensburg Stuns Men’s Soccer in OT

Shippensburg, Pa. – The Shippensburg Red Raiders scored the game-winning goal just over two minutes into the overtime period to hand the Millersville men's soccer team its first loss of the 2015 season. Shippensburg was victorious by a 2-1 score on Tuesday afternoon at David See Field.
At the 92:09 mark, Ship midfielder Jeff Ballard flicked a pass over the Marauder defense and was able to reposses the ball as he slid his shot attempt past keeper Kohl Orner. The game-winning goal improved the Red Raiders to 6-7 overall and 3-6 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.
Millersville dominated the majority of the statistical categories, holding an 18-10 advantage in shots and 10-2 margin in corner kicks, but Ship was the lone team to record a shot on goal in the decisive overtime period. Millersville, now 11-1-1 overall and 8-1 in the PSAC had previously posted the best start in program history.
The Marauders opened the scoring within the first minute of play as a Shippensburg foul led to a free kick from midfield. Kyle Finsterbush whipped the long ball into the Red Raider 18-yard box and it found the head of Jaime Vazquez who redirected the ball up and over the keeper. The goal represented Vazquez's 15th goal of the season which cements him for fourth in program history and once again ties him for first in all of Division II in goals scored. The assist was Finisterbush's second of the season after recording the other on Sept. 9 in the 3-0 win over Bloomsburg.
Shippensburg found its equalizer in the 11th minute when two Marauder defenders crashed into each other, which led to James Connor having a breakaway on net. Connor was able to beat Orner in the one-on-one opportunity for his fifth goal of the season. The teams went into the halftime break tied 1-1.
The Raiders nearly opened the second half with a goal as Robert Furfaro whistled a shot attempt just wide of the post in the 62nd minute. The Marauders had a couple of strong chances to pull ahead in the 64th minute as a Ben Johnston shot sailed wide and a Jesse Zimmerman attempt caused the home keeper Matt Harder to make a sprawling save.
Earlier in the afternoon, Millersville was voted ninth in the in the National Soccer Coaches of America (NSCAA) Division II Poll for the second consecutive week.
Millersville has over a week to prepare for its next opponent as it returns to non-conference action with a match slated against Wheeling Jesuit. The Ville is set to travel to Wheeling, W.Va. on Wednesday, Oct. 21 with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
