Second Half Surge Not Enough as Marauders Fall to Delaware State
11/24/2014 8:26:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Dover, Del. - The Millersville women's basketball team trailed Division I Delaware State 51-29 with 15:30 to play in the second half before it used a 23-9 run to cut the deficit to eight. However, it was too little, too late for the Marauders who dropped a non-conference decision to the Hornets 71-60.
Millersville (3-2) was even able to cut the deficit to seven, 64-57 with 4:06 on the clock but Delaware State (1-3) sealed its first win of the season with a 7-3 fury down the stretch. The Marauders outscored the Hornets 21-7 in bench points but were outdone in fast break points by a 16-4 margin.
With the score at 51-29, Alex Stam drained a pair of triples, Shelby Reimer added another and Tyisha White converted a jumper to cut the score to 53-40. Aunjel Van Brakle then made a layup, White added four more points, Reimer hit another trey followed by an Alayah Hall free throw and a Carly Gallagher layup. At that point, momenetum had completely changed sides, the visitors were only down eight and there was just under seven minutes to go until the final buzzer.
The home team proceeded to score four straight points and the lead was back to 12. After back-to-back layups from Gallagher and Reimer and a Courtney Hinnant free throw, the deficit was seven, the smallest it had been since the 13:32 mark of the first half. However, then came the 7-3 run by Delaware State to put the game out of reach.
Millersville shot just 31.1 percent on the night compared to 45.3 by the Hornets. The Marauders turned the ball over 19 times and eclipsed 18 for the fifth time in as many games. Millersville took care of the ball much better in the second period with only seven giveaways in the second 20 minutes. The Marauders sunk a season-high seven 3-pointers in 29 attempts from behind the arc.
Individually, Reimer led in scoring with 14 points to go with four rebounds, two assists, a steal, and was 4-of-11 from long range. Gallagher was the other Marauder in double figures with 13 and registered the third double double of her career as she also had career-high 12 boards.
Next up, Millersville travels to Adelphi on Nov. 30 and tip is set for 1:30 p.m.
