Adelphi Runs Away from Millersville in New York
11/30/2014 4:24:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Garden City, N.Y. - No. 25 Adelphi made 13 of its 31 attempts from behind the arc and led by as many as 34 in the second half en route to a 81-50 win over the Millersville women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon.
The Marauders fell to 3-3 on the season including 1-3 on the road while the Panthers won their sixth-straight decision to open the 2014-15 season. Adelphi controlled points off turnovers (32-12), second-chance points (19-9), bench points (38-24), and Millersville was held without a single fast-break point.
The home team opened the game on a 12-4 run and made five of its first 11 field goal attempts. The Marauders didn't go away quietly though and scored 10 of the next 12 points to tie things up at 14-14. Alex Stam fueled the fury with a pair of triples, both of which came on Carly Gallagher assists. At that point, the Panthers used a 25-7 advantage of their own over the next 9:53 to take all the momentum back and head into the locker room with an 18-point lead, 39-21. The visitors shot 22.2 percent (6-of-27) from the floor in the first half compared to 37.8 percent (14-for-37) by their hosts.
Out of the intermission, the hosts pushed their advantage to 24, 52-28, and eventually 34, 76-42, with just 3:01 to play in the game. Millersville's offense caught fire a bit in the second half to shoot 39.1 percent (9-of-23) while Adelphi's attack was tough to stop at 45.7 percent (16-for-35).
For the game, Gallagher led all scorers with 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting and turned in an 8-for-10 performance at the free throw line. The fifth-year senior also registered four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Alexis Martin led the team in rebounds with six and has led the squad in that category four out of the season's six games. Martin also had three steals while Tyisha White added two assists.
The Marauders will jump back into PSAC East play on Wednesday with a home game against Mansfield set to start at 5:30 p.m. That matchup is Millersville's only home game in the midst of a 28-day span to go with seven road contests.
