Millersville, Pa. – Talk about “stealing” a win. The women's basketball team avenged a road loss at East Stroudsburg last season Wednesday night by defeating the Warriors 69-55 to improve the team's record to 11-5 (8-4 PSAC). Senior point guard Mashira Newman broke a five-way tie for the most steals in a game in team history by thieving 11 Warrior passes on the night.
Newman's new record breaks the five-way tie by current Millersville athletic director Peg Kauffman, Amy Gipprich, Paula Light, Safiyyah Bashir and Gema Robles, as each of those players had 10 in their own performances. Not only was the total a school record performance for the North Hills native, but it also represents the fifth-highest total in a game in PSAC history. Newman also added eight points and six assists in the win, playing a game-high 37 minutes.
While Newman's record was the note of the night, it was also a return to form for forward Aurielle Mosley, who scored 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and two blocks; she also hit all six of her free throw attempts for the game. The senior had not scored in double figures in her past three outings leading up to Wednesday night's game.
Another player who was a thorn in the Warriors' side all game long was Senada Mehmedovic. Mehmedovic hit for 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range. The junior also chipped in four assists and two rebounds.
Miesha Cousins just missed the third double-double of her career, posting nine points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Only three Marauder players scored in double-figures, and Carly Gallagher was that third player, backing Mosley and Mehmedovic with 10 points and five assists of her own.
After a letdown game last Saturday at West Chester, Millersville made sure to start strong at ESU, as the Marauders jumped out to a six point lead by the first media break at 8-2. Mosley scored six of her 20 points in the game's first 3:27.
Millersville claimed a lead as large as nine three different times in the first half, the first time on a 3-pointer by Mehmedovic and then on a layup by Gallagher before Gallagher gave the team its third nine-point lead on a 3-pointer late in the first half. The Marauders went into the locker rooms up 34-27.
In the second half, the Marauder lead grew to as much as 17 points twice, the final time on a layup by Mosley with just over two minutes to play. Millersville's defense was able to weather the storm of Jessica Martin, who notched 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Marauder defense, which allowed the Golden Rams to score 94 points just four days ago, limited ESU to 31.6 percent from the field and 9.1 percent from beyond the arc. It was the team's lowest 3-point field goal percentage allowed in 2012-13.
With the win and by only allowing 55 points in the process, Millersville remains undefeated in two key areas for the season – when the team leads or is tied at halftime (10-0, 7-0 PSAC) and when the team allows its opponents to score 60 points or less (8-0, 7-0 PSAC).
The Marauders now turn their attention to a Kutztown team that will enter Pucillo Gymnasium Saturday at 10-6 and an identical 8-4 in PSAC play. Millersville is 51-20 all-time against the Golden Bears and collected a win on its home floor last season by a 65-55 margin. Tip time for Saturday's game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
