One year ago, W.Va. Wesleyan handed Millersville a 55-3 loss on opening day--the worst in school history. Millersville returned the favor Saturday, scoring its first home-opening win since 2003, and totaling its most points in any game since 2009 and its most points in an opener since beating Bowie State 41-0 in 1999.
Millersville rushed for 234 yards and totaled 400 yards of offense. Stachitas accounted for 286 yards of total offense and two touchdowns. He rushed for 120 on 19 totes, including runs of 40 and 53 yards. It was the most rushing yards by a Marauder quarterback since Jamal Smith went for 136 on 20 carries against East Stroudsburg on Sept. 29, 2007. He completed 12-of-24 passes for 166 yards and a long of 40.
Myles, playing in his first collegiate football game, pounded his way for 93 yards on 18 carries. It was Myles' sledgehammer-like 25-yard run that pounded the final nail in the coffin with 2:18 left on the clock. Mike Jones added three touchdowns--two rushing and one receiving.
Redshirt sophomore linebacker Jordan Rigby starred on defense, picking off two passes, and his interception with 10:12 left in the third quarter turned the tide of the game.
Millersville trailed 10-7 and had just come up empty for a fifth-straight offensive drive. Wesleyan quarterback Nate Montana dropped back from on his own 12 and fired a pass toward the Millersville sideline. Rigby batted the ball up and snatched it out of the air. Turning toward the goaline, he sprinted 19 yards for a score and 14-10 Millersville lead.
Millersville's defense forced a punt on Wesleyan's ensuing drive. On third and nine, Stachitas hooked up with Jones for 22 yards to move the chains. On the next play, he found Matt Egenrieder for 42 yards to the Wesleyan 24. Five plays later, Stachitas kept on a read-option and scooted around the left end for five yards and a touchdown.
Wesleyan quickly answered. Stephen Knox broke the kick return 72 yards to the Millersville 18. The drive ended in a Montana to Stephen Campbell six-yard touchdown hook up. But David Coates nearly matched Knox. He took the next kickoff 48 yards to the Millersville 48. On the second play of the series, Stachitas kept for a 40-yard to the Wesleyan 12. Jones rushed twice and then caught a seven-yard strike from Stachitas to put the Marauders on top, 28-17.
With nine minutes left in the fourth quarter, Stachitas ripped off a 53-yard run to the Wesleyan six. On the next play, Jones scored his third TD of the game. Knox fumbled the following kick return, and Jake Allen pounced on it, giving Millersville the ball at the Wesleyan 40.
The Marauder offense was able to drain the clock, and the defense kept Wesleyan scoreless. Myles finished the game with six runs for 48 yards on the final drive including his 25-yard TD run.
It took some time for the Marauders to click on offense, though. A promising drive mid-way through the first quarter was halted at the Wesleyan 3-yard line when a snap sailed over the head of Stachitas, and Wesleyan recovered. Millersville trailed 3-0 until a Wesleyan fumbled on its own one yard line. Brian Knell made the recovery, and Jones scored his first TD to give the Marauders a 7-3 lead.
Wesleyan took the lead 10-7 on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Montana to Boston with 4:37 left in the half.
Montana totaled 255 yards passing but threw two picks--both to Rigby. Rigby tallied five stops, a half-tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a QB hurry. Knell and Jamie Thomas led the team with eight tackles. Thomas and Reggie Slaton both had sacks.
Egenrieder led the Marauders in receiving with three catches for 85 yards. Coates totaled 109 yards on two kick returns, including a long of 61.
Millersville returns to action Saturday, Sept. 8 against Mercyhurst, looking for its first 2-0 start since 2005.
