GAME OVERVIEW
• Both Millersville and Cheyney entered Saturday's Homecoming game with identical records and are in search of a first PSAC East victory. The teams are eerily similar, winning a non-conference game with an an impressive offensive showing to open this season and then skidding to five straight losses in which the offense struggles. Cheyney ranks 153rd out of 156 Division II teams in total offense and Millersville ranks 143rd.
• Millersville, however, showed signs of life with freshman quarterback Connor Casey throwing for 313 yards in his debut against nationally-ranked and undefeated Bloomsburg a week ago. With Casey at the helm, the Marauders generated 400 yards of offense for the first time since the season opener. While he was the third starting quarterback this season and the fifth since the start of 2011, Casey was the first quarterback to not throw an interception in a game this season. His quick decision making resulted in him being sacked only three times, which was the fewest in any game this season.
• Cheyney is only the second team on Millersville's schedule with a below .500 record. The other opponent was W.Va. Wesleyan (now 2-4), which Millersville beat 41-17. The last five opponents combine for a record of 26-4 and three of the teams are nationally-ranked.
• Since 1972, Millersville is 21-17-1 in the annual Homecoming game but are just 1-5 since 2006. Millersville hosted Cheyney on Homecoming only one other time. That meeting came in 1990 with the Marauders winning 52-18. Millersville has been outscored on average 39.3-17.6 over the last six homecoming games.
ABOUT THE SERIES
• Millersville owns a convincing 55-5-1 record in the all-time series and has won 27 of 28 since 1984. Millersville scored no fewer than 31 points in 19 of 20 games, but in the last two meetings, the Marauders have scored 17 and 10 points.
• Last season's game at Cheyney came down to the wire with the Marauders hanging on for a 10-7 win. The Marauders trailed 7-0 at the half but received a 33-yard field goal from Anthony Kassab with 1:12 left to take the lead. Cheyney's final drive fizzled at the Millersville 25 with two incomplete passes into the end zone.
SCOUTING THE WOLVES
• Cheyney has been held to 10 of fewer points in four of six games this season and ranks 15th in the PSAC in scoring offense but trails Millersville by only 0.1 points per game. Millersville also holds a slight edge in scoring defense, holding teams to 1.8 points per game fewer than Cheyney. Outside of the season opener against Lincoln, the Wolves' best offensive performance of the season came against East Stroudsburg when it scored 27 points. Blaze Wasserleben threw all three of his touchdown passes in this game and totaled 190 yards. Justin Watkins rushed for 51 yards and caught three passes for 99 yards. His touchdown catch was a 92-yard bomb, which is the longest pass play in the PSAC this season.
• The team leans heavily on the run game with nearly 76 percent of its offensive snaps being a rushing attempt. Cheyney rushes for 144.2 yards per game but throws for 71.2 yards per game, which is 72.3 yards on average fewer than any other team in the PSAC. Running back Marcus Jones was All-PSAC East in 2010 but missed the last two games after a solid start. He rushed for 110 yards on 18 carries against Mercyhurst. Without him, Wasserleban provides the bulk of Cheyney's offense. He leads the team in rushing with 278 yards but has the fewest yards per game (64.0) , lowest completion percentage (45.2) and quarterback rating (89.3) of any QB in the league.
• Based on Connor Casey's first game, he could have another big day against Cheyney as opposing quarterbacks are completing 65.4 percent of their passes while throwing 13 touchdowns and just four interceptions.
THE LAST TIME OUT FOR THE MARAUDERS
• A true freshman making his debut against the No. 7 team in Division II is not ideal, but Millersville's Connor Casey turned in a historic performance against Bloomsburg, throwing for 313 yards and two scores. Bloomsburg, however, proved too much for the Marauders and left Chyrst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium with its perfect record intact and a 38-14 win.
• Despite Casey's day, the Huskies (6-0, 3-0 PSAC East) were their overpowering selves, rushing for 340 yards. The No. 2 rushing offense in Division II received 143 yards on 11 carries from Franklyn Quiteh and 110 yards on 15 totes from Eddie Mateo. Both runners entered the game ranked in the top 10 in Division II for rushing yards per game.
• Millersville outscored Bloomsburg 14-3 in the second half, but the halftime deficit was 35-0. Millersville missed opportunities to keep the game within striking distance early. On the second offensive possession, Casey drove the Marauders to the Bloomsburg 27 using three completions including a 32-yard hook-up with Trenton Petrovich that was the first catch by a Millersville tight end this season. On the next play, however, Myron Myles was stripped of the ball, and Bloom's Jarrett Pidgeon pounced on it.
• The Marauders also missed a pair of field goals. The second of the two was blocked after a drive stalled at the Bloomsburg seven with 3:08 to go in the half. To compound the problem for the Marauders, Terrell Oglseby scooped up the loose ball and scooted 92 yards for a touchdown.
• Casey was sharp from the start, completing 18-26 passes for 187 yards in the first half alone but had no points to show for the performance until a 15-play, 82-yard drive mid-way through the third quarter. Casey capped the drive by squeezing a pass between defenders to Jones in the back of the end zone from four yards away.
• With just under seven minutes left in the game, Casey completed a 27-yard pass down the sideline to Jeff Buchanan, setting up a 24-yard touchdown toss to Shane Doughty, who elevated and hauled in the pass in the back of the end zone. Buchanan's catch was the first of his career, and Doughty's was his first career touchdown.
CATCHING ON
• Running back Mike Jones has shown his versatility this season by leading the team in receptions with 30. Jones has always been an adept pass catcher, totaling 36 in 13 games as a sophomore and junior. But with 30 this season, he ranks 12th in the PSAC eventhough Millersville's passing offense ranks 15th in the league.
• On Oct. 6 against Bloomsburg, Jones became the first Marauder since Jamal Smith in 2010 to record at least 10 catches in a game when he totaled 13. That was the most by a Marauder since Ryan Clift totaled 13 in 2003, and it also tied for the most in the PSAC this season (Dusty Reed, East Stroudsburg).
• Jones' 55-yard catch against Bloomsburg was the longest completion of the 2012 season and the longest since Jamal Smith and Bill Shirk hooked up for 75 yards in 2010.
• Dominic Sanders also recorded a career-high nine catches for a career-high 98 yards against Bloomsburg. His previous high in catches was seven, and it was his first game with more than 90 yards receiving.
• In the same game against Bloomsburg, Shane Doughty caught his first career touchdown, and Trenton Petrovich made his first career reception.
THE CENTURY MARK
• Mike Jones' 108 yards receiving against Bloomsburg on Oct. 6 gave Millersville its first 100-yard game since Oct. 30, 2010--a span of 18 games. It was the first 100-yard receiving game of his career. He rushed for 100 yards against Lock Haven in 2010.
TOUCHDOWN MAKER
• Mike Jones has scored on the ground and through the air this season and leads the team with five total touchdowns. He caught his team-leading third touchdown of the season on Oct. 6 against Bloomsburg and has also rushed for two touchdowns. He is now tied for 17th in the PSAC in receiving touchdowns.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE EVERYTHING
• Connor Casey made a historic debut at quarterback on Oct. 6 against Bloomsburg. The first Millersville true freshman to start a game since Kris Meyers in 2002, Casey completed 30-of-43 passes, marking the most pass completions and the most yards by a Marauder true freshman on record.
• It was also the first time since 2010 that a Millersville QB completed 30 passes and threw for 300 yards. He had 187 yards in the first half, which was more passing yards than in any of the previous 16 games.
• Casey was Millersville's fifth starting quarterback since the start of the 2011 season and the third of 2012. With both Ted Stachitas and Sean Quarterman out with injuries, Casey became the first Marauder QB this season to not throw an interception in a game. He also led his team in rushing with 35 yards on 10 carries.
CALLING TIGHT ENDS
• Trenton Petrovich made his first career catch on Oct. 6 against Bloomsburg, hauling in a 32-yard reception from Connor Casey. It was the first catch by a Millersville tight end in the 2012 season, and only the third by a tight end in the last 20 games dating back to the 2010 season. Greg Frantz caught two passes in the 2011 season finale.
ONE BIG BOOT
• Following the first series of the Sept. 22 game at Shippensburg, punter Jeff Lawson kicked the longest punt in school history. With the ball snapped from his own 19-yard line, Lawson booted the ball into the Shippensburg end zone for a touchback and an 81-yard punt. That kick out-distanced the previous mark by eight yards. George Rule owned the previous record, kicking a 73-yarder againts Wittenberg in 1979. It is the longest punt in the PSAC this season.
KICKING AWAY
• Senior punter Jeff Lawson has been busy this season. His 8.0 punts per game is the most in Division II. His average of 38.8 is 53rd in the nation. 13 of his punts have landed inside the 20 yard line while only one has been a touchback. He has three punts of at least 50 yards.
• In his last four games, Lawson has three punts of 50-plus yards and nine punts inside the 20.
SENIORS' MOMENT
• Millersville's roster is led by 20 seniors. Of that group, 17 entered 2012 with starting experience. Lou Brown, Matt Egenrieder, Pat Maloney, Mike Jones, Brian Knell, Zack Riley, Jeff Lawson, Josh Hunter and Pat Cantrell are all multiple-year starters. As many as 13 seniors have started a game this season. The entire senior class has combined for 239 career starts. Riley, with 33, is the team leader.
MAKING THE SWITCH
• Lou Brown, who spent two-and-a-half seasons at wide receiver, moved to cornerback for the final five games of 2011. He finished the season with an interception and a recovered fumble. He was recruited as a corner, so it is his more natural position.
• Brown has picked up right where he left off, picking off two passes including one against Shippensburg's Zach Zulli, who had previously thrown only one interception this season. Brown ranks third on the team in tackles with 37 tackles. He has recorded a career-high in tackles in each of the last three games including 10 against Bloomsburg.
• Brown is second in the PSAC in passes broken up with seven.
RACK 'EM UP
• Senior Pat Maloney has been among Millersville's leading tacklers going on four consecutive seasons, and has piled up 213 in his career. His numbers have improved each season, jumping from 43 as a true freshman to 78 as a junior. He was averaging 10.6 per game as a sophomore until he was injured after game five. Maloney led the PSAC in tackles at the time of his injury.
• Last season, he also led the Marauders in tackles for loss with 9.0 and sacks with 4.0. He aims to become just the sixth player since defensive stats started being recorded in 1973 to lead the team in tackles in back-to-back seasons. Matt Sutjak most recently performed the feat in 2008 and 2009. The last Marauder linebacker to do so was Lee Rizzotto, who did it from 1997-99.
• So far in 2012, Maloney leads the team with 39 stops. He also has a quarterback sack to his credit.
• Maloney's 13 tackles against Mercyhurst were a game high, giving him eight games with double-digit tackles in his career. He has also led the team in tackles in seven of the last 14 games that he has played.
FIRST IN A WHILE
• Jordan Rigby became the first Millersville defensive player to be named PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week in over five years Sunday after intercepting two passes and returning one for a touchdown in the week one win over W.Va. Wesleyan.
• His 19-yard interception return for a touchdown turned the tide of Saturday's game. Millersville trailed 10-7 in the third until Rigby's interception return put the Marauders on top to stay. He picked off Nate Montana twice, totaling 26 return yards. He also hurried Montana once, broke up another passes and tallied five tackles including a half-tackle for loss.
• His INT return was the first by a Marauder since Dan McClellan's in the 2008 season opener at Bentley.
THREE BY ONE
• Running back Mike Jones totaled a career-high three touchdowns in week one against W.Va. Wesleyan. One came on a reception and the other two were rushing. In his 12 previous games as a Marauder, Jones had scored just two touchdowns, and his first quarter, 1-yard run against Wesleyan was his first TD since scoring on a 74-yard run against Shippensburg on Oct. 30, 2010. It was also the first three-touchdown performance by a Marauder since Jamal Smith totaled three touchdown catches against Lock Haven on Sept. 11, 2010.
LIVING ON THE EDGE
• Marauder defensive end Reggie Slaton is having a breakthrough season. His 39 tackles rank first on the team. His 7.5 tackles for loss are not only a team best, but ranks seventh in the PSAC.
• No Marauder has had more than 93 stops since Joe Hollister won the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year award in 2004, and no player has had more more than seven sacks since Lee Rizzotto totaled 13 in 1999.
SPECIAL SPECIAL TEAMS
• As a team, Millersville ranks fifth in the PSAC in kick returns after averaging 24.4 yards on 32 returns. Of players with more than five returns, David Coates is sixth in the league and 14th in Division II in average at 29.4 on 22 returns. His 97-yard touchdown return against West Chester is the second-longest return in the PSAC this season and was one of just seven returns for touchdowns. He also had a 61-yard return against against Wesleyan and a 60-yard return against Shippensburg.
• Coates has five returns of at least 40 yards this season. The TD return at West Chester was the first of his career and the second TD of his career. It was also the first touchdown on a kickoff return since Jamal Smith's against LIU Post in 2010. It also came within three yards of matching the school record for the longest return. Coates now leads the PSAC in return yards (646) and kick returns (22).
• Coates is averaging 3.7 kick returns per game--more than any other player in Division II. He ranks 14th nationally in average.
• Coates is well on his way to a record-setting season. The school record for kickoff returns in a season is 32 by Terrance Trogdon in 1991. Kevin Cannon (1994) owns the kickoff return yards record with 760. Coates is on pace for 41 returns and his 31.4 average puts him at 1,205 kick return yards by the end of the season.
