Big Bats Give Florida Southern Sweep Over Marauders

Clermont, Fla. — Florida Southern got 20 hits over two games to sweep a doubleheader from the Millersville softball team by scores of 8-0 and 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon at the National Training Center.
The Moccasins (12-9) tallied four runs in the second and third innings of game one to open up an 8-0 lead. Millersville starter Alicia Hughes (1-2), took the loss, but still pitched well in the contest. Hughes was rarely hit hard as Florida Southern had just two extra base hits in the game. Four of the eight runs she allowed were unearned.
Kelly Fitzgerald saved the Black and Gold from being no-hit for a second straight game when she singled in the fourth. Brittaney Alderman struck out five over four innings to earn the win for FSC. Bethany Boomer had the hot bat for the Mocs in game one, going 3-for-3 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs. Dani Blake also drove in two and had a multi-hit game for the victors.
Millersville would fight back from an early deficit in game two, only to see a last inning run spoil their hopes of a split in the 5-4 defeat. The Mocs used two runs in the second and one in the third to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Still looking for offense, the Marauders (3-5) got a pick-me-up from pinch-hitter Amy Kossyk in the bottom of the fourth. Kossyk slammed a 2-run bomb to left-center field that brought Millersville within a run. FSC tacked on a run in the top of the 6th, but once again, MU fought back.
Two hits and a fielder's choice loaded the bases for the Marauders in the bottom of the sixth with no outs. A great base-running effort by Lindsay Hosier to beat shortstop Dezirae Parsons to third base on a ground ball helped aid the situation. Casey Coker would make it a one-run game again with an RBI groundout and freshman Laura DeVoe came through with a 2-out RBI single to left to tie the game at four.
Florida Southern would take the lead for good in the top of the seventh, however. Catcher Heather Raulerson almost duplicated DeVoe's run-scoring single with one of her own to give the Mocs a 5-4 lead off of Millersville reliever Courtney Eckman (1-2).
Christine Clark worked six strong innings for FSC to earn the win, while Alderman came on to lock down her second save. Sarah Signore, who started game two for MU, took a no-decision after striking out eight batters over six innings.
Rain is in the forecast for Thursday, but Millersville is scheduled to face West Liberty at 9:30 a.m., and Assumption at 11:30 a.m.
