MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville men's soccer team picked up its second PSAC East win Wednesday night, taking down West Chester, 2-1.
Sophomore Brian O'Neill opened the scoring in the 31st minute. A free kick drawn just outside the West Chester 18-yard box gave Millersville an early opportunity. A ball crossed into the box by Louis Wright ricocheted through the area before landing at the feet of O'Neill, who capitalized to give the Marauders the lead.
The Marauders carried that momentum into the second half, gaining early possession and creating another scoring opportunity. Drew Jones maneuvered his way into the West Chester box before being tackled, drawing a penalty kick for Millersville. Roy Parkyn stepped up and converted the penalty to extend the Marauders' lead to 2-0.
"It was great to finally be at home again and play in front of our fans who were great today." said head coach Steve Widdowson. "I thought throughout the game today we moved the ball really well and spread out the field. I think we could have been a bit sharper and cleaner around the box in the first half to create more opportunities, but we did much better with that in the second half.
West Chester responded three minutes later with a goal of its own, as a Golden Rams player got a touch on the ball that found the back of the net past Gavin Massimi, who finished the night with two saves.
"It was a tough pill to swallow when they scored, especially when there was a very obvious foul in their build up that was not called." said Widdowson. "However, the guys showed great composure to take control again and see the game out. I think they showed good maturity to switch back on and get to work and see the game through to the end.
Millersville held strong defensively during the final stretch, securing the 2-1 victory over the Golden Rams and moving to 2-0 in PSAC East play.
The Marauders return to action Saturday when they welcome in East Stroudsburg.
