SPARKS GLENCOE, Md. — The Marauders put the pressure on and never let up in a dominant win over the Caldwell Cougars. 11 first-half goals and success on draw controls pushed the lead to ensure a running clock before the first half break.
The Marauders, who are on their spring break trip playing at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters, started hot from the first whistle. Opening the scoring for the Marauders was Claire Roussey, who cut through the heart of the Caldwell defense and caught a pass from Kayleigh Dunn on the crease for the easy finish in the opening minute of play. We came here to get a job done. Obviously, it was nice and fun to get away for spring break, but we came here to get a job done, continue to make a statement in the conference, and get a win. The Marauders scored five unanswered goals in the first quarter from four different scorers in Addison Geary, Jodylynn Cadden, Brianna Gora, and Kayleigh Dunn.
The Marauders' defense was not tested much in the first quarter, but they stayed sharp into the second until Caldwell broke through for their first goal of the half. The second quarter was all Marauders despite Caldwell's goal, and with 2:20 left in the second quarter, Kayleigh Dunn pushed one past the goalie on a free possession shot to force a running clock.
Coming out of the half, a whole host of Marauders registered their first career minutes and first minutes of the early season. It is good to develop the players that maybe don't get a lot of time in other games. Letting them get out there, make mistakes, and make plays is huge for us in being able to develop our younger players.
Caldwell would go on to score another in the fourth quarter, but the lead was just too big for them to mount, and the Marauders would go on to win in dominant fashion by a score of 18-2
A lot of what we got out of the last couple of days on this trip was off-field stuff. We were able to connect as people first, and I think that helps a lot player to player. Coach Hinkle said about the benefit of this spring break trip for her team.
