MILLERSVILLE, Pa. --- With rainy weather forecasted for well after the conclusion of the Marauders' final regular season game of the year, Biemsderfer was holding on to the hope that they would come out of this one dry. With the spark of the second half whistle, down came the rain, and with it, Millersville's offense, which sparked a 6-0 scoring run to not only gain the lead but cement themselves a senior day victory.
The first quarter was as deadlocked as you would imagine between two teams that had the same record going into today and who last met in a game decided by three goals. Bloomsburg opened up the scoring just two minutes into the opening stanza, while it was Brianna Gora, who struck back for the Marauders just under a minute later. The first quarter progressed, and the Marauders didn't find the back of the net again for another seven minutes when Brianna Gora scored her second of three goals in today's contest. Millersville took its first lead of the game when Shannon Meder netted her sole goal of the contest off an assist from senior Mary Moraca.
While the Marauders' offense stalled, with just one goal in the second quarter, Bloomsburg mirrored their first quarter performance with three goals of their own to take a comfortable 6-4 lead going into halftime.
Then, despite its best effort to stay away, the rain started coming down hard. With that, so did the Marauders. Just two minutes into the second half, Brianna Gora scored her hat-trick and kick-started a six-goal unanswered scoring run for Millersville. After 10 minutes of scoreless play in the third quarter, senior Kayleigh Dunn scored her first of two goals of the contest as the Marauders began to pile it on. When it rains, it pours, and with just two minutes left in the third quarter, the Marauders scored two quick-strike goals. First, with senior Mary Moraca pushing one past the Bloomsburg keeper, and then Addison Geary, who found the twine as well. With that, the Marauders flipped the script and led 8-6 going into the fourth quarter.
Millersville continued to push the pedal to the metal and scored two more goals to secure a four-goal lead before Bloomsburg responded. With the game still within reach for the Huskies, after nearly 30 minutes of scoreless play, they finally answered Millersville's run to cut the Marauder lead to three goals. Key defensive stops from Millersville players like KC O'Neill, who made some huge saves, senior Katlyn Krebs, who ran out a lot of clears for the Marauders as legs began to get heavy, and senior Hailey Jordan, who had multiple crucial ground ball pickups down the stretch, allowed the Marauders to stay on top and secure the senior day victory.
In her reaction to the game, Coach Hinkle said, We ended the way 'Ville lacrosse plays. We won it for our seniors; they put a lot of dedication into the past four years, and today they really just showed out, so it was great to get those team wins for them today.
While it is fresh, if she were to describe the first year at the helm for the Marauders lacrosse program, she said, We have a great group, and we certainly have a lot to build off of. We had a lot of youth out there on the field this year who played alongside our seniors that are heading out, but also we built, had hardships, faced adversity, and ultimately prevailed.
Millersville celebrated six seniors before the contest to show their appreciation for everything that they have put into the program, and wished them the best as they progress through life. Katlyn Krebs, Mary Moraca, Hailey Jordan, Clare Roussey, Kayleigh Dunn, and Lara Kruck all had great careers for the Marauders and capped off their collegiate lacrosse careers with a huge win over a PSAC foe.
