SHEPHERDSTOWN, WVa. --- Millersville women's lacrosse (5-7, 3-5 PSAC) exploded with 10 first-half goals to sweep the in-season series against the Shepherd Rams (2-8, 1-5 PSAC) to snap a two-game losing streak.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
It started in the opening stanza, when less than 30 seconds after the opening draw, Shepherd got on the board to take a 1-0 lead. What seemed like it could be a long day for the Marauder defense turned itself around when Kayleigh Dunn tied things up a minute later for the Marauders on a free-position shot attempt.
With a 3-2 lead heading into the final five minutes of the first quarter, Millersville doubled its first-quarter score courtesy of two goals from Mary Moraca and a very late goal from Brianna Gora, who scored on a free-position shot attempt with just under 30 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Freshman attacker, Carmen DeCaro had a career game when she assisted Millersville in a 3-0 run to open up the second quarter with two of their three goals. The three unanswered goals from the Marauders now made the score 9-3 and threatened to put the game entirely out of reach. Millersville would go on a 10-minute scoring drought until, with just under five minutes left in the half, Addison Geary struck to make the score 10-4. Shepherd closed out the half with two goals of their own to cut the Marauder lead to four with 30 minutes to play.
Shepherd battled back in the third quarter and brought the Millersville lead to just two goals going into the final quarter, but it was a combination of a Millersville shutout in the fourth and goals from Carmen DeCaro, her fourth of the day, and Addison Geary that closed out the game for Millersville.
