Millersville bounces back in game two to split Opening Day doubleheader

Wingate (3-2) had scored 50 runs in its first four games of the season, but Matt Shamany (1-0) entered in the third inning with Millersville trailing 3-2 and carried the Marauders for the next 3 1/3 innings, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out four. Gavin Lill struck out two in the seventh to close it.
"Shamany was really good," said Millersville head coach Jon Shehan. "He attacked the zone with multiple pitches, and was able to pitch to multiple parts of the strike zone. It was impressive for his first time out."
Millersville totaled six hits and four stolen bases and took advantage of a pair of Wingate fielding errors. The top of the first inning set the tone with Donis Rodriguez and Matthew Williams starting with singles and a double steal with Jimmy Kirk following with an RBI single. Xavier Smith was plunked by a pitch, and Brady Ebbert plated a run with a sacrifice fly. Hunter Stevens tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth with an RBI double, and back-to-back errors in the fifth helped Millersville push across three runs. Conor McCartney, who had three hits in the doubleheader, tacked on an RBI single in the sixth.
Rodriguez led the Marauders with two hits, a double and a steal in game two.
Millersville's bats were plenty productive in game two, but Wingate responded to Williams' first-inning home run with 11 in the bottom of the inning. That hole was too deep for the Marauders to escape despite totaling 12 hits and drawing seven walks. Eight of the Marauders' runs came in the eighth inning.
The bottom of the first inning spiraled out of control quickly for the Marauders. Wingate sent nine batters to the plate with just one out recorded, and the No. 2 hitter, Bowen Powell hit a three-run home run his second trip to the plate. Wingate totaled nine hits, four for extra bases, and three free passes in the inning. While it was a rocky start, freshmen Eli Simonton and Brody Bump quieted the Wingate bats the rest of the way. Simonton gave up two runs and struck out three in 3 1/3, and Bump gave up one run in 1 2/3. The 15 runs resulted in the most allowed by Millersvill on Opening Day since 2009.
"Giving up 11 in inning one wasn't on the bingo card, but I was pleased with how we responded to it," said Shehan. "SImonton was excellent in his first outing. He was ahead of most hitters. I would have liked to have gotten him out after three, but we needed him to eat another inning, and he ran out of gas."
Williams reached base four times in game one, delivering two hits, two walks, two runs and two RBIs. Ebbert went 2 for 5 with a walk and an RBI. Smith and McCartney also recorded two hits apiece. Maddox Yost drove in two runs and scored one.
"Offensively, almost everyone contributed at some point today," said Shehan. "A lot of times, timing is an issue the first time out. That was not the case today. I also thought we made quality decisions for the most part. I think there were three-four poor decisions without going back to the video. If you are on time and swing at good pitches, you're bound to be successful at the plate."
Millersville's schedule stays tough with the next eight games against teams that won at least 35 games and played in the NCAA Tournament in 2025. The Marauders play both No. 19 Felician and Molloy twice as part of a four-game set in Hampton, Va., from Feb. 12-15.
