Marauders down top-seeded Griffins with home run barrage

Seton Hill, the PSAC West champion, entered the postseason the nation's second-lowest WHIP and only 16 homers allowed in 50 regular season games. But Millersville hit its most homers in a game since April 3, 2019, set the program's postseason record for homers, and scored its most-ever runs against Seton Hill. The 16 runs were also the most that any PSAC team has scored against Seton Hill since it joined the conference in 2014.
"We've had a tough year at the plate," said Millersville head coach Jon Shehan. "It just seemed like we couldn't get the offense going this spring. Today, it clicked. We hit up and down the lineup...We anticipated a low-scoring match-up. I did not have have six homers on my bingo card."
The Marauders piled up 19 hits, scored at least one run five consecutive innings before the six-run seventh ended the game via the tournament's 10-run rule. Millersville's first eight runs were all plated on four home runs. Matthew Williams went 4 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. Brady Ebbert drilled two homers and totaled three hits, three runs and three RBIs. Troy Chamberlin erased an early 1-0 deficit with his three-run blast in the third, and he finished with three hits and four RBIs. Christo Hunsicker totaled three hits, three RBIs, a home run and a walk, and Xavier Smith hit a home run with three RBIs and three runs.

"I think Troy's homer was huge," said Shehan. "To throw a big punch like that built a lot of confidence with our group. It's like landing the first big punch in a fight and knowing your opponent is beatable. Seton Hill has been playing great baseball. We've been close the last couple of weeks. Our guys are starting to believe."

PSAC West Pitcher of the Year Sean Williams had surrendered just one home run all season and had allowed just two earned runs in his previous 20 innings pitched. But Chamberlin, Ebbert and Smith tagged him for three homers before knocking him out of the game with seven runs and 10 hits allowed over four innings. The Seton Hill bullpen fared no better as the Marauders hit three more home runs and scored nine in the fifth through seventh innings.
"I'm really happy for Brady Ebbert to turn in a two homer day," said Shehan. "He came to Millersville because he wanted to play and win in the postseason."

Millersville freshman Eli Simonton, making his postseason debut, pitched 5 1/3 innings for the win, and he limited Seton Hill, the PSAC's top run-scoring and home run hitting team to two runs until a two-run home run with one down in the sixth. Seton Hill had a chance to rattle Simonton early in the game, putting two on in the first, getting two hits and a run scored in the second, two more hits, an error and another run in the third, but Simonton proved unshakable. He stranded runners in each of his first five innings, an effort highlighted by a strikeout with two on and two out in the fourth.
"Simonton was good enough today," said Shehan. "He got into trouble a few times but made big pitches and minimized the damage. He's got ice cold veins."
Millersville's win sets up a five game of the season against East Stroudsburg on Friday at 11 am. East Stroudsburg needed 11 innings to beat Gannon 3-2 earlier on Thursday. The winner of Friday's game advances to the PSAC Championship game.
