'Ville rolls past No. 19 Felician for third consecutive win

The Marauders' (4-2) won their third consecutive game, and the bats continued to produce at a terrific rate, scoring double-digit runs for the fourth time in six games. Millersville is now average 11 runs per game. Millersville has totaled more runs than hits in five of the six games. On Saturday, the Marauder hitters were plunked eight times and runners swiped a season-high seven bases.
"This group has been super selfless to this point," said Millersville head coach Jon Shehan. "We've been drawing walks, getting hit by pitches at a wild rate, and situationally hitting. It's a lot of fun to watch an offense play the game as a unit--not as a bunch of individuals. They know that 90 feet equals 90 feet, no matter how we earn it."
Smith went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, two runs, a double and a homer. Christian Cerone drove in three runs and stole two bases, and Jimmy Kirk finished 2 for 3 with a walk, stolen base and three runs scored. Donis Rodriguez stole three bases and was hit by two pitches.
Millersville held a narrow 5-3 lead in the fifth when Smith crushed a home run to deep left field, bringing home Matthew Williams and Brady Ebbert. That homer rattled Felician. Millersville sent 14 batters to the plate and Felician used three pitchers in the inning. After Smith's home run, four consecutive Marauders were hit by pitches and Ebbert and Williams drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks. The final run of the inning scored on a pitcher's balk.
While the Millersville lineup has scored 33 runs in the last three games, Rece Ritchey and Eli Simonton continued an impressive turnaround for the pitching staff. After allowing 35 runs and walking 28 batters in the opening three-game series, Millersville has surrendered five runs and walked seven in the last three. Ritchey, who walked five in 2 2/3 innings a week ago, bounced back by striking out five with one walk in three innings.
"Ritchey was 0-2 and 1-2 on a lot of hitters early in the game," said Shehan. "We were happy with that. That was positive. His stuff is really good and his strike percentage was up tonight. Now, he just needs to make quality pitches in those counts to finish hitters."
Freshman Eli Simonton earned the first win of his career, fanning four and allowing just two bases runners in four shutout innings. Simonton has now allowed just three hits in 7 1/3 innings this season.
"I'm not surprised at all by Simonton's quick start," said Shehan. "He's intelligent, confident, and knows how to pitch. He was excellent for us in the fall as well. He's got a bright future."
The weekend schedule changed Saturday, and Millersville closes the weekend with a third game against Felician Sunday at 10 a.m.
