ABOUT THE GAME

  • The Millersville Marauders (12-16, 10-12) host the East Stroudsburg Warriors (10-17, 8-14) in the first round of the PSAC's Eastern Division playoff tournament at 6 p.m. in Pucillo Gymnasium.  These two programs split the season series, with the home team taking both matchups. The winner of this game will face No. 14 Lock Haven on Wednesday evening.
  • It is the second straight season the Marauders have hosted the Warriors in the first round of the PSAC Tournament, as they defeated the visitors 72-65 in Millersville on February 27, 2023.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • The gameplan for the Marauders was already laid out a few weeks ago when they beat the Warriors 53-34 on February 24. In that game, they held the visitors to just 23.3% from the field and the Warriors' 34 points scored was the fewest Millersville allowed all season. They won the points in the paint battle 28-20, the points off of turnovers battle 15-12 and kept East Stroudsburg from scoring in transition (14 fastbreak points to two).
  • On the season, Millersville sports a record of 8-4 when recording more points in the paint than the opposition and a 10-1 mark when scoring more points off of turnovers. The ‘Ville was on the wrong end of both of those statistics in its 65-55 loss to the Warriors on January 27, allowing 40 points in the paint to their own 32 and 17 points off of turnovers to nine. The final area that the Marauders will need to control is the defensive glass. In game one, the Warriors tallied 16 second chance points to the Marauders’ six; in game two, Millersville had an 18-15 advantage on the offensive glass and registered 10 second chance points to the Warriors' nine.
  • Millersville's leading rebounder on the season Brenna Ortwein figures to play a part in that plan. The first game between these two teams was the only time all season that the junior failed to grab a rebound. Since then, she's had three double digit rebounding games and has improved her per game average to 6.0. She also leads the team in steals average at 1.5 per contest.
  • Offensively, the Marauders will go as forward Makiah Shaw and guard Jabria Ingram go. Shaw was the team's leading scorer for most of the season and finished 20th in the conference at 13.0 points per game. She and Ingram are two of three players on this team that played in the playoff game last year (La'Shyra Williams being the other). Shaw led her team in scoring in both games against the Warriors this season, scoring 18 in game one and 16 in game two. Her efforts in game two on the defensive side of the ball helped garner her the PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week award, as she finished with two blocks and a steal while serving as the team's defensive anchor.
  • The 2023 playoff matchup was Ingram's first start of her Millersville career. This season, she's started 12 games and the ‘Ville is 8-4 when she does. Ingram is fourth in the PSAC in assists per game at 4.2, second in the PSAC in assist to turnover ratio at 1.8 and third on the team in points per game at 8.2. Ingram missed the initial contest between these two programs but tallied five assists and three steals on Feb. 24.

SCOUTING THE WARRIORS

  • It has been quite the journey for East Stroudsburg to even make it to this point. After losing to Millersville on February 24, the Warriors had lost six of their last seven and would need a win over either Kutztown or Mansfield in their final two games to make the Tournament. Then they went out and won not one but both of the games against the higher seeds to move into the fifth seed.
  • Like both prior matchups, this shapes up to be a battle in the paint, as East Stroudsburg is second to last in the PSAC in three-pointers made per game (2.5) while Millersville is last (2.3).  Neither team made a shot from beyond the arc in their February 24 meeting on 16 total attempts.
  • The Warriors haven't fared much better inside the arc either, as they're also second to last in the conference in team field goal percentage (34.8%). Their company at the bottom of those rankings is less than stellar; the bottom two teams in both divisions surround them on both sides in those rankings. Those numbers are a contributing factor as to why the Warriors are dead last in the conference in points per game at 50.6. In comparison, the Marauders sit fourteenth with a mark of 58.3. East Stroudsburg hasn't scored more than 60 points in its last seven games and has been held below 50 four times in that stretch.
  • Their defense is what has won them games this season, especially down the stretch. They're seventh in the league in scoring defense at 59.0 points per game and sixth in opponent field goal percentage with a mark of 37.7%. Millersville's 53 points scored was the most they gave up over their last five games.
  • Junior center Emily Chmiel is the Warriors' top scorer points per game and has done some of her best work against the Marauders. She scored the second most points of her career (24) against the Marauders in the first matchup this season and led the Warriors with 14 in game two. Chmiel has increased her production of late, averaging 12.8 points over her last five games and reaching double figures in all but one. She also ranks first on the team in rebounding with 6.9 per contest despite playing just 16.9 minutes per game, eighth on the team. That rebounding mark ranks fifteenth in the league.
  • Despite the offensive woes, junior guard Corrin Gill has managed to break into the top 10 in assists per game at 3.3, good for sixth in the PSAC. She leads East Stroudsburg in both that and steals per game (1.6) among qualifying players. She's a candidate to play every minute for the Warriors, as she was on the floor for 78 of a possible 80 minutes in the prior two contests.
  • Junior Izzy Vogel ranks second on the team in steals and scoring with 1.4 and 8.6 per game, respectively. She's reached double-figures 10 times in the 2023-24 campaign but has done so just once in her last seven games. In fact, Vogel was held scoreless when these teams met on February 24, part of a three game stretch in which she's averaging just 4.7 points per game.

SERIES HISTORY

  • This is technically the second-longest rivalry in Millersville women's basketball history. These two programs first met during the 1922-23 season but didn't do so again until 1951-52. It was in the 1978-79 campaign that they began meeting on a consistent basis. Millersville holds a clear edge in the all-time series with a 59-34 mark with most of the damage coming since 1998. The Marauders have a sparkling 42-13 record against the Warriors since then, including winning streaks of 16 and 10 games. The 'Ville has fared much better at home than on the road traditionally, with a 35-10 record when playing in Millersville.
  • In playoff matchups, the all-time record sits level at 3 wins apiece. These two teams met in a similar situation last year, as the Marauders hosted the Warriors in the first round of the playoffs and emerged with the 72-65 victory.
