Paint dominance fuels 43-point blowout of Georgian Court

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — Four players reached double figures as the Marauders set season highs in points in the paint and field goal percentage in Millersville's 87-44 defeat of Georgian Court Sunday afternoon. The hosts never trailed and held the lead for 39:34 of the game's 40 minutes in what amounted to the team's biggest win in over a decade.
The Lions were short-handed with only eight active players and just one of them was 5-foot-10 or taller. The hosts took advantage of that, outscoring the Lions 46-18 in the painted area over the course of the game. The primary benefactors were forwards Makiah Shaw and Bryn Zentner, who tallied 16 and 14 points respectively. They did a good job of sealing their defenders and finishing the play once the ball was inserted to them.
"We came in at halftime saying that we left so many layups on the table, so the focus was for them to finish those in the second half," head coach Kira Mowen said postgame. "I like that we got ball into the paint and had our post players run the floor and work hard for it. And then it panned out; when they can finish through contact, and finish period-we look better."
The Marauders had their best game of the season as far as taking care of the ball was concerned, committing just eight turnovers. Kali March led the Marauders with six assists and had just one giveaway in addition to her 14 points. Millersville pushed the pace off of turnovers and was lethal in transition.
The hosts dominated the game in nearly every facet including from beyond the arc. They set a season high in made threes (seven) and three-point percentage (53.8%). Jillian Crawford led the way, shooting 3-of-4 from downtown and 5-of-6 overall for her 13 points. That also represented a season-best for Crawford. She was decisive with her touches, either pulling up for three coming off of a screen or driving to the basket and laying it in. She led the team in scoring with 10 points in the first half. Crawford's performance was representative of an effective bench effort as a whole.
"The most important thing for young women is to have the game experience and I thought they did a great job," Mowen said of the bench effort. "They knocked down their shots. They stepped up and had the opportunity to get in and get into the flow of the game. I thought they did a heck of a job today and I want to continue to use them when I can."
Millersville returns to game action at Clarion on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Tip-off for that contest is scheduled for 3 p.m.
