MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville University football program began to announce the new additions to its 2020 roster on Wednesday's National Signing Day. The recruiting class is the second under the direction of head coach
J.C. Morgan.
At the end of Wednesday, 36--34 high school seniors and two transfers--had signed an NLI. It is the second consecutive sizable class for Morgan who brought in more than 50 in his first class. While numbers were a necessity in year one, the focus of the 2020 class was more specific.
"What we were able to do this year was to identify specific needs and go out and address those needs," said Morgan. "Having a year with our current roster and forecasting our needs two-three years out, it is good to put together a class with specific goals in mind instead of filling numbers with talented guys. We were able to find talented guys this year, but the focus was more on finding guys who fit our specific recruiting needs."
The staff's primary focus was building depth on the offensive and defensive lines, at linebacker and in the secondary. The Marauders return just four linebackers and seven defensive linemen with game experience in 2020. A total of 20 true and redshirt freshmen saw the field for Millersville in 2019.
"You are always trying to find players who can play sooner rather than later, but also guys we can develop," said Morgan. "I think we were able to find both. We brought in some mid-year guys who can come in and help next season. And today, with this signing class, there are a couple of guys who will join us in August who I think have a chance to help us quickly."
For Morgan and the staff, the message on the recruiting trail was simple.
"This is a great place to go to school," said Morgan. "There is a coaching staff here that we love what we are building. There is a lot of energy and a lot of excitement. The young men who are here with us right now with the coaching staff, we are on a mission. We have administration behind us, and we are building it the right way. We are having a lot of fun doing it. With the energy, passion and commitment, it's a great time to be a part of the program."
