Millersville scores 22 fourth quarter points in a furious comeback attempt but falls short, 51-49

Kutztown, Pennsylvania -- The Millersville women's basketball team scored 22 points in the fourth quarter in a furious comeback attempt against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Kutztown University Saturday. Ultimately, the team fell short missing a tying 3-pointer in the final minute to lose, 51-49.
Millersville entered the fourth quarter down 44-27 to KU, but the Marauders would rally and overcome poor shooting during the first three quarters. Millersville began to suffocate KU's offense while also getting shots to fall. By the time KU registered their first points of the final quarter with 4:26 remaining, Millersville had scored 14 points.
Millersville would follow up KU's first fourth quarter bucket with Krista Mellinger's jumper the following possession to bring the score to 46-43 with 3:55 remaining.
Both teams would shoot cold on the floor for the next two-and-a-half minutes before Reuneshia Williams was fouled with a 1:30 remaining. Williams would miss her first free throw but make her second to break the scoring drought and cut KU's lead to two. However, KU would immediately be fouled on the inbound by Aunjel Van Brakle and converted on one of their two free throws.
Millersville would race up the court after the free throws, and Van Brakle made her lay up to cut KU's lead to 47-46 with 1:18 remaining. Again, Van Brakle would foul and KU would convert one of two free throws to push the lead back to 48-46 with 49 seconds remaining. On the next Millersville possession, KU would steal the ball, forcing a foul from Courtney Dimoff with 25 seconds remaining. KU would again covert one of two free throws to make the score 49-46.
Following the free throw, Dimoff would get a good look at three, but the tying bucket would rattle out into KU's hands. Kendra Bamberger fouled and KU would convert both free throws to make the score 51-46 with 12 seconds remaining. In Millersville's final possession, Bamberger would miss a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining, but Savannah Krusinsky would get the rebound and dish it back out to Bamberger. Bamberger would drain a three to beat the buzzer, but the team fell two points short of forcing overtime.
Millersville's next game is Wed. Feb. 22 against PSAC rival West Chester University at 5:30 pm in Pucillo Gymnasium.
