Millersville loses a heartbreaker to Pitt-Johnstown 55-54

Millersville, Pa. -- Millimeters separated Millersville from their second straight conference victory when redshirt junior Kendra Bamberger's last second put back lay up hung on the rim before falling back to the floor as the buzzer blared in Pucillo Gymnasium. Millersville fell to Pitt-Johnstown 55-54 Sunday afternoon.
With 4.7 seconds remaining on the clock, sophomore Courtney Dimoff in-bounded the ball to senior Alayah Hall in the half-court. Hall turned and drove the lane from the top of the key and laid up a shot that was too strong. The ball rattled off the rim and into the hands of Bamberger who stood under the basket. The final second of the clock ticked down as Bamberger put back an expedited attempt but it did not fall Millersville's way.
The Mountain Cats tried to run away with the game early as they put together two different 7-0 runs in the first quarter. However, Millersville battled back and tied the game with a 1:38 remaining in the first half. Finally, Millersville broke through as junior Jade Farquhar took the lead for the first time with 1:15 remaining in the first half. Two free throws made by Hall in the final minute closed out the half with a 34-32 lead.
Millersville held onto their tight lead but never lead more than four points over the Mountain Cats in the second half. UPJ finally tied up the game with less than five minutes to go in the third quarter. The Mountain Cats looked to run away with the game again after building a five point lead with 4:20 remaining in the fourth quarter, but a 6-0 run for the Marauders saw Millersville take a one point lead with 46 seconds remaining. However, a UPJ lay up in the final 22 seconds proved to be the go-ahead basket as Millersville could not get a game winning shot to fall.
Bamberger lead Millersville with 16 points while Hall and Farquhar each scored 14 points. Redshirt junior Janelle Robinson provided support on the defensive end as she snagged eight rebounds and recorded a steal for the Marauders. Millersville could not get the outside shot to fall and did not score from beyond the arc. Instead, they relied on high-percentage shots and outscored UPJ 34-20 in the paint. However, overall shooting proved to be the difference maker down the shot as UPJ shot 37 percent from the field in the second half while Millersville only shot 27 percent.
Millersville falls to 3-4 and 1-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Marauders have the week off before hosting PSAC rival Slippery Rock on Dec. 9 at 1 p.m.
