Ville outlasts UVA-Wise 56-47 as Hall ices the game from the free throw line
11/11/2017 8:15:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Millersville, Pa. -- The Millersville women's basketball team denied UVA-Wise's comeback and won 57-46 after senior Alayah Hall and freshman Lauren Lister shot perfect from the field and from the free throw line following UVA-Wise's tying shot with a 1:16 remaining.
After junior Jade Farquhar drained her free throw to complete a three point play and put the Marauders up 46-41 with 2:59 remaining, the Cavaliers meticulously came back to tie the game up at 46 with 1:16 remaining in the game. Head Coach Mary Fleig called a timeout following the tying basket to reset the team. The Marauders leaned on their senior leader Hall to drive the lane and draw fouls in the final minute of the game, and she drained all eight attempts from the charity stripe. Lister, who enjoyed a break out game in her first Millersville appearance, stepped up with a steal and lay up in transition to help end the game in Millersville's favor. On defense, Millersville forced three turnovers and held the Cavaliers to one made free throw in the final stretch.
UVA-Wise opened the scoring with a three in the opening thirty seconds before Millersville took a 5-3 lead with 7:50 remaining in the first quarter and held on to that lead until the third quarter with 4:22 remaining. The Cavaliers regained the lead and held it into the fourth quarter with momentum in their favor. However, the Marauders battled back and retook the lead with 5:18 remaining in the game.
Hall lead the team with 18 points while also recording the most minutes (35) on the floor. She earned extra possessions for Millersville with four offensive rebounds and three steals. Most importantly, Hall shot 90 percent from the free throw line which was 19 points better than her career average. Redshirt junior Kendra Bamberger was one point from a double-double in her first start of the season. The forward amassed 10 rebounds while also notching an assist, a block and a steal in 29 minutes. The Marauders were glad to see redshirt junior Janelle Robinson return to the starting line up after an injury-laden 2016-17 season. Robinson's scrappy play earned her four rebounds and four steals while also registering a block and an assist.
Millersville's youth movement was in full effect during its first game. Lister was targeted by Coach Fleig as a potential breakout performer during the preseason, and the freshman played efficient and impactful basketball during her 26 minutes on the court. The 5-8 guard shot 50 percent from the field while snagging three rebounds, three assists, three blocks and one steal. Freshman Catherine Copeland shot 80 percent from the field while snagging three rebounds and registering one steal in her first 25 minutes as a Marauder.
The Marauders were out-rebounded 44-40 but earned additional possessions with three more offensive rebounds while earning 15 steals to UVA-Wise's seven. Another stat that Millersville dominated was turnovers. While the Marauders recorded 16 turnovers, the Cavaliers turned the ball over 27 times, and Millersville outscored UVA-Wise 25-16 off turnovers. Both teams had a difficult night shooting and failed to average over 31 percent.
Millersville begins their season 1-0 for the 12th straight time and improve to 2-0 all-time against UVA-Wise. The Marauders return to Pucillo Gymnasium tomorrow Nov. 12 to take on 2016-17 national runner-ups and current No. 2 Virginia Union at 3 p.m. The Panthers are reeling after a 89-79 loss to Edinboro University at Pucillo Gymnasium that took place right before Millersville's match up with UVA-Wise.
