Marauders storm past Cheyney with 52 first half points

Millersville (4-5, 3-3 PSAC East) scored its most points since 2001 and that occurred without the team throwing a single pass in the second half. Quarterback Tony Staffieri accounted for five touchdowns in the first half alone, throwing for four--all to different players--and rushing for one. He netted 245 yards on just 12 completions. Staffieri also rushed for 67 yards. Wiggins caught five passes for 122 yards and did not play a snap after halftime.
In less than six minutes of game time, Millersville built a 17-0 lead. The Marauders scored 24 points in a span of just over four minutes, recovering two onside kicks in a row, and by the time Kobe Miranda scored a five-yard touchdown run with 7:15 left in the first quarter. By that time Cheyney had had only one offensive possession, running only three plays.
Millersville's onslaught included a career-long 44-yard field goal by Joey Farley, Tyrone Gibson's four rushing touchdown in as many weeks, a 53-yard completion from Staffieri to Wiggins and a Staffieri four-yard scramble. A 38-yard grab by Evan Morrill and the nine-yard catch and run by Nii Kotei Nikoi were the first touchdowns for both players.
Millersville finished the first half with 376 yards to Cheyney's 88. With Stephen Flanagan at quarterback, Millersville marched 64 yards on 16 runs on the first drive of the third quarter. Gibson's one-yard plunge through the pile capped the scoring for the day. Millersville did not punt until the final minute of the third quarter.
The Millersville defense was led by Tommy Halloway's eight tackles and two tackles for loss. Logan Kinser recorded 1 1/2 sacks, Tanner Dean and Michael Stock each recorded one and Cameron Boykin shared one with Kinser. Jhet Janis made his second interception of the season.
The Marauders' fourth win marks the most for the program since 2006.
Each of Millersville's final two games are at home, starting with next week's clash against West Chester.
