Slippery Rock, Pa. -- Junior Chase Flickinger and sophomore Jacob Gosselin scored two goals apiece in the first half as No. 22 Millersville put away Slippery Rock University 4-1 Friday. This was the second straight game that Millersville dispatched a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponent 4-1.
Millersville struck first in the fifth minute as senior Marcus Frangakis crossed the ball from the right side of the box. Flickinger quickly received the pass and shot his attempt into the back of the net. Three minutes later, Slippery Rock equalized after Luke Picchi barely got his shot off as redshirt junior keeper Coby Breen was closing on Picchi.
Slippery Rock applied more pressure after Picchi's goal and earned four corner kicks and forced Breen to save a shot on goal through the 33rd minute. However, the Marauders remained steadfast and overcame the flurry. Junior Dylan Fogerty recorded Millersville's first shot following Flickinger's goal in the 34th minute. Fogerty's attempt hit the crossbar, but the midfielder put his team in another scoring position a minute later. The Marauders continued their pressure on the Rock, and Fogerty crossed a pass to Gosselin who netted the go-ahead goal for Millersville.
Not content with only one goal, Gosselin followed up his first effort 38 seconds with a second goal. Senior Jesse Zimmerman moved the ball forward before crossing it into the box to the waiting feet of Gosselin. The midfielder placed his attempt in the bottom right side of the goal to put Millersville up 3-1. Flickinger iced the game for the Marauders after scoring in the 44th minute off of Zimmerman's second assist of the game.
The game quieted down in the second half after the first half's fireworks, and Slippery Rock recorded only one shot while Millersville recorded two shots including senior Ryan Phelps forcing a save with a header. The Millersville defense prevented the Rock from earning a corner kick in the second half.
Millersville improved to 9-3-1 on the season and 5-2 in the PSAC. The Marauders rank third in conference and sit four points behind Gannon and six points behind conference leader West Chester. Millersville hosts Shippensburg University Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. for the first leg of Millersville soccer's doubleheader against the Raiders.
