Marauders Go Cold Late in Streak-Ending Loss to ESU
2/24/2016 7:36:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Millersville, Pa. - Millersville won its first meeting with East Stroudsburg at the free throw line, but it was its performance at the line that might have cost it a ninth consecutive victory Wednesday night. The Marauders shot just 7-of-18 from the stripe and lost an eight-point third quarter in a 64-57 loss that cost them a shot at a first round bye in the PSAC Tournament.
Millersville made a season-high 28 free throws in the Jan. 27 match-up but could not find its touch Wednesday. Still, the Marauders raced to an 18-6 lead in the first quarter and held a 44-36 lead with fewer three minutes remaining in the third quarter. But the Marauders went cold over the final 13 minutes. East Stroudsburg outscored Millersville 28-11 the rest of the way, hitting three threes while Millersville went 4-of-20 from the field, 0-of-5 from three and 3-of-10 from the line.
East Stroudsburg tied the game for the first time at 46-46 on an Allison Howard 3-pointer one possession into the fourth. Yasmin Cooper, who led all scorers 17 points, quickly answered and Millersville built a three-point lead with 6:56 to play. But after Celeste Robinson's bucket that put Millersville in front 52-49, the team managed just one field goal until the final seconds, being outscored 15-3 and shooting 1-of-10 in the stretch.
Cooper connected on 8-of-12 shots and blocked two. Robinson chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds. While Cooper and Robinson combined to shoot 14-for-22, the rest of the team combined to shoot 8-for-37.
Millersville now hosts Lock Haven on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the first round in the PSAC Tournament.
