Women's basketball victorious in season opener

Lincoln, Pennsylvania - The Millersville women's basketball team opened its 2016-17 campaign with a 76-55 victory over Lincoln University in the CIAA/PSAC Challenge Friday. Celeste Robinson led the way with 23 points as four Marauders scored in double digits en route to a comfortable victory. Alayah Hall registered 14 points while Courtney Hinnant and Janelle Robinson both chipped in with 10 points.
The two sides were evenly matched in the first quarter as Jade Farquhar tied the game at 17 just before the end of the quarter. The Marauders began to establish dominance in the second quarter, going on a 9-0 run early in the period to jum out to a 27-18 lead. The Lions would cut to lead to eight when Spencer McKenzie hit a three, but Millersville would not allow Lincoln to creep closer, taking a 36-26 lead into halftime.
Celeste and Janelle Robinson looked to establish control in the third quarter, lifting Millersville to a 44-28 lead and forcing a Lincoln timeout. After the Lions would cut into the deficit (45-32), Celeste Robinson drilled a three that killed the momentum for Lincoln and give the Marauders a 16 point advantage. After extending the lead to 17, Lincoln cut the deficit to 10 when Paynes-Hightower high a jumper to make the score 50-40 Millersville.
With the score 52-42, Celeste Robinson scored a layup and the next time down the court Alayah Hall nailed a three to put the Marauders up by 16. Millersville would tack on another six points, eventually extending the lead to 20 points. Despite the best efforts of Lincoln, the Lions would only get within 15 points, but Celeste Robinson, Courtney Hinnant and Alayah Hall would combine for the remaining 12 points to power Millersville to a 76-55 victory over the Lions.
The Marauders begin the season 1-0 and have a quick turnaround, returning to Lincoln tomorrow to face Virginia State University at 4 p.m.
