Marauders' Streak Stopped at IUP
1/6/2016 7:55:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Indiana, Pa. - In a match-up of two of the hottest teams in the PSAC, the home team held the upper hand Wednesday night at Indiana (Pa.). The Crimson Hawks, now winners of six in a row, stopped Millersville's four-game winning streak by a 56-45 final.
The game played out just the way the Marauders prefer--a low-scoring, defensive slugfest. The Marauders had won seven of eight by employing that style of play and despite shooting a higher percentage and out-rebounding the Crimson Hawks 42-31, they committed 18 turnovers that led to 18 IUP points. Millersville out-scored IUP in the first and fourth quarters but was out-scored 27-14 in the second and third and put up just five points in the third.
Celeste Robinson scored the final bucket of the first half at the 1:54 mark to bring Millersville to within three at 25-22. But IUP quickly pushed its lead to double-digits after halftime as the Marauders shot 2-of-13 and committed nine turnovers in the third period. With 4:40 left in the quarter, Zhane Brooks made one of two free throws, starting an 8-1 for the Crimson Hawks. Millersville missed its next eight shots, and the drought did not end until more than two minutes into the fourth with Robinson hit for two to cut IUP's lead to 10. Millersville never came closer than nine points the rest of the way. IUP hit 8-of-9 free throws in the final quarter, keeping Millersville at a distance.
Robinson totaled a game-high 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting. She was the lone Marauder in double-figures. Yasmin Cooper grabbed 12 rebounds and chipped in nine points. Carolyn Appleby's 15 points led three Crimson Hawks in double-figures.
Millersville returns home Saturday to host PSAC East-leading Shippensburg at 1 p.m. The Marauders are 5-1 at home this season.
