Widdowson Earns Win No. 100 in Opening Match Victory Over Holy Family
9/4/2015 12:20:00 AM | Men's Soccer
Millersville, Pa. – Head coach Steve Widdowson of the Millersville University men's soccer team earned career win No. 100 as his squad defeated the Holy Family Tigers by a 2-0 score in Thursday's season opener. Widdowson is 100-52-10 since taking over as the head coach in 2007 and is the winningest coach in program history (by percentage) among coaches who have coached at least 100 games.
Millersville (1-0, 0-0 PSAC) overwhelmed the Tigers from the opening whistle, launching 12 first half shots, several from dangerous positions within the attacking third of the pitch. However, Millersville was unable to beat senior goalkeeper Richard Onargo as he made two saves in the first half holding the hosts scoreless in the half.
The Marauders' offensive pressure finally prevailed early into the second half when senior Jaime Vazquez converted a penalty kick to give the Marauders a 1-0 advantage. Vazquez finished the match with two shots overall and his first goal of 2015 equated to the 20th goal of the Bernville, Pa., native's highly-productive colligate career.
Millersville held the Tigers to only one shot in the second half, outshooting Holy Family 21-3 for the game. Senior goalkeeper Kohl Orner was solid between the pipes earning his fourth career shutout.
The Black & Gold added an insurance goal late in the second half when freshman Dylan Fogerty slipped the ball past Richard Onargo. Fogerty was setup by a brilliant free kick off the foot of defender Ryan Phelps, who earned the assist.
Millersville returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 6 as the Marauders travel to West Virginia Wesleyan to face the Bobacts in a non-conference affair. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
