First Half Scoring Burst Propels Marauders Over Adelphi
9/12/2015 6:30:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville men's soccer team scored three-straight goals in the first half to knock off the Adelphi Panthers 3-2 this afternoon despite lightning and rain delays at the start and in the middle of the first period.
Adelphi (1-1-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a strike in the second minute. With the ball just outside of the box, Matt Giaconelli ripped a shot past the outstretched arms of Millersville keeper Kohl Orner that put the Panthers ahead.
However, Millersville (3-0-1, 1-0 PSAC) responded not once, but three times within the next 12 minutes that propelled the home team to a commanding lead. A Panther turnover helped Jaime Vazquez gain one-on-one positioning with the keeper and he clinically finished it to even the score in the eighth minute. Three minutes later, Vazquez put the Marauders up for good with a beautiful finish that fooled the Panthers goalkeeper. The senior forward now has four goals on the season, which is good for second best in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
In the 13th minute, Kyle Finsterbush joined the scoring frenzy as Tanner Brenize fed him the ball after it bounced off a Panther defender in front of net after a brilliantly drawn up set piece. Finsterbush noticed that Serigio Reyes was screened in front of the net and ripped a shot into the bottom left corner.
Millersville opened the second half looking to add to its lead as Dylan Fogerty fired a shot that was at least 50 yards out that dipped and clanked off of the crossbar. A scoring drought would ensue before the Panthers came within one goal during the 75th minute as Caelan Hueber struck off a John Stojcevski assist.
The Black & Gold were able to thwart off all Panther attempts for an equalizer in the final 15 minutes as it held on for the victory. Adelphi held a 21-11 advantage in shots, but the Marauders were much better at placing them on target (seven out of the nine). Kohl Orner made seven saves to keep his team out in front throughout the match.
The Marauders return to PSAC action with a match against East Stroudsburg on Tuesday, Sept. 15. First touch is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Pucillo Field.
