Women's Basketball Toughs Out Road Win at Cheyney
12/16/2015 7:46:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Cheyney, Pa. - Buckets were at a premium in Wednesday's PSAC East showdown between Millersville and Cheyney, and it was the Marauders' defense that made the difference. By holding Cheyney to 22.7 percent shooting, the Marauders won 48-37 for their fourth win in five outings.
Millersville (5-4, 3-4 PSAC East) continued its upward rise, holding its fourth consecutive opponent to fewer than 60 points. Cheyney's leading scorer Kyra Hines-Allen entered the game just 14 points shy of 1,000 and ended the game with four points and three turnovers on 1-of-7 shooting. Millersville overcame a tough night for its leading scorer. Celeste Robinson totaled nine first half points but was slowed by foul trouble in the second half and did not score over the final 20 minutes. Yasmin Cooper helped the Marauder cause with her fourth career double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The 8-7 end-of-the-first-quarter score was a sign of the game to come. Millersville managed to up the tempo in the second quarter and extended the lead to 25-17 at the break. Cheyney mustered just five points and one made field goal in the third quarter as the Marauders extended the advantage to as many as 12 on two occasions. With 7:44 left in the fourth quarter Millersville pushed the lead to 15 on two free throws from Courtney Hinnant. Cheyney did not have nearly enough offense to make up that difference. The Wolves shot 18.2 percent (4-of-22) in the second half.
Millersville controlled the glass with a 46-32 edge. The Marauders grabbed 20 offensive rebounds--nine from Cooper--and scored 17 points off of those boards. Millersville improved to 4-0 when totaling at least 40 rebounds.
Tyisha White chipped in nine points on 4-of-8 shooting. Cooper was the lone Marauder to crack double figures.
Millersville stays on the road, traveling to Lock Haven Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip.
