Millersville, Pa. - West Chester turned Millersville's season-worst 30 turnovers into 23 points (23-9) en route to a 66-52 loss for the Marauders who dropped their sixth straight for the first time since the 1994-95 season.
Since senior Carly Gallagher went down with an injury in the second half at Pitt-Johnstown on Jan. 7, Millersville's (10-10, 7-8 PSAC) assist-to-turnover ratio is 35 to 111 or over three turnovers for every assist. Also, in the 15 games that Gallagher appeared in, the Black and Gold averaged 64 points per game. However, in the five games since, the scoring average is down to just under 53 points per contest. The Golden Rams (16-3, 12-3 PSAC) shot just 31.3 percent from the floor but their defense came through and they pushed their wining streak to five straight and six of the last seven.
The first 16 minutes and change of the first half saw the two teams tie five times and exchange the lead seven times with the final deadlock coming at the 3:46 mark when it was 22-22. During that opening span, Tyisha White scored all eight of her points to carry the Marauders. However, the visitors then ended the first stanza on a 10-3 run and headed into the intermission up seven, 32-25.
To begin the second half, West Chester picked up right where it left off at the break and doubled its hosts 16-8 over the first seven minutes and 52 seconds. At that point, The Golden Rams owned their biggest advantage of the night at 15 points, 48-33. Millersville didn't go away quietly though and answered that fury with a 16-6 run of its own that cut the deficit to five, 54-49. The spurt was fueled by four points from Alexis Martin as well as a 3-pointer from both Aunjel Van Brakle and Alexis Yanief. It was too little to late though as West Chester ended the game on a 12-3 run to put it away by a 14-point margin.
Statistically, Martin led the way for Millersville and was one rebound shy of a double double with 12 points and nine boards. White and Sabina Mehmedovic each added eight points apiece. Team-wise, the Marauders shot just 35.5 percent from the field, 23.1 percent from behind the arc and 41.7 percent at the charity stripe.
Saturday, Millersville will host East Stroudsburg for a 1 p.m. tip inside Pucillo Gymnasium.
