Millersville Suffers First Home Loss to Cheyney Since 1986
1/10/2015 7:22:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Millersville, Pa. - Cheyney shot lights out in all three phases to defeat the Millersville women's basketball team 70-63 in its first game without starting guard and fifth-year senior Carly Gallagher. The Wolves also handed Marauder head coach Mary Fleig her first ever home loss to the Wolves (25-1).
Since winning seven of eight in the midst of the season to improve to 10-4 overall, Millersville (10-6, 7-4 PSAC) has dropped two straight and lost its first home game of the season (7-1). Cheyney (3-12, 3-7 PSAC) stayed red-hot all day to shoot 48.9 percent (23-of-47) from the field, 60 percent (9-for-15) from behind the arc and 83.3 percent (15-of-18) from the free throw line.
The first half opened with a 9-2 run from the visitors and all nine points came from Takayla Ellis' 3-pointers. Over the next six minutes and 40 seconds though, the Marauders outscored the Wolves 15-8 to tie things back up at 17 apiece. Aunjel Van Brakle and Courtney Hinnant each poured in four points during that stretch as Millersville was 6-for-12 from the floor. From that point until the intermission, the game saw five more ties with the final one coming at halftime, 34-34.
In the second stanza, the teams tied six more times and were knotted up 53-53 with 6:48 to go until the final buzzer. Cheyney then embarked on an 11-4 fury of its own that lasted three minutes and 29 seconds and put the away team up 64-57. At that juncture, there was 3:19 to play and the home team needed an answer. Alexis Martin knocked in a pair of freebies and the Wolves' Amber Genwright answered with two of her own before Shelby Reimer drilled a much-needed triple from the right wing. That cut the margin back to four, 66-62, with 2:21 on the clock but the deficit was never smaller than that. Cheyney's Kyra Hines-Allen added a layup and two free throws and the Wolves held on for the seven-point victory.
Van Brakle led the hosts with a career-high 13 points to go with two rebounds, one block and one steal while Reimer and Hinnant each added 10 points. Yasmin Cooper was one point shy of a double double with 16 rebounds and tied a personal-best three blocks along with one assist and a steal. Tyisha White started for just the second time in her career and tallied a game-high and career-high four steals.
Team-wise, the Marauders held the advantage in second-chance points (16-2) and points in the paint (26-16) but their bench was outscored 32-25.
Next up, Millersville is home to Lock Haven on Wednesday with the tip set for 5:30 p.m.
